Her Story

About Naima

Naima M. Haji is a visionary leader, educator, author, and equity advocate dedicated to empowering families and building brighter futures for children. In 2023, she became a published author, writing two bilingual children’s books in English and Somali that emphasize representation and inclusion—ensuring that bilingual children can see themselves reflected in the stories they read.

Since 2024, Naima has worked as a consultant while leading the social enterprise she founded, which includes Bilan Organization and Bilan Consulting. “Bilan,” a Somali word meaning “something beautiful,” reflects her mission to uplift communities and serve as a voice for those who are often unheard. Through her work, she champions equitable education, particularly for children from low-income and immigrant families, with a strong focus on early literacy as the foundation for lifelong learning.

Naima’s professional journey is a powerful testament to resilience and determination. After arriving in the United States from Kenya in 2017 without a high school diploma, she earned her GED, two associate degrees, a bachelor’s degree in Business Management, and a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Leadership from St. Cloud State University in 2024. Her lived experiences fuel her passion for education and equity.

She has developed impactful programs that bridge family engagement with community support, including family literacy events that provide free books and educate caregivers on the importance of parental involvement in early learning. She also partners with Fahan Organization to advance community engagement, women’s empowerment, and workforce development initiatives.

A mother of four, Naima is deeply committed to redefining what is possible for women. She believes women can excel beyond traditional roles and make meaningful contributions to society. Through her leadership and advocacy, she empowers others to pursue education, step into leadership, and rise—regardless of their background.

Through Bilan Organization, Bilan Consulting, and her broader advocacy work, Naima continues to expand access to opportunity, inspire communities, and ensure that every child and family has the tools and support they need to thrive.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Naima

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance and the unwavering support of my husband. Balancing motherhood, full-time work, and full-time education while building the life I envision has not been easy—but resilience and dedication have carried me through, and they continue to guide me every day.

I deeply value the importance of a strong support system. I intentionally surround myself with family and friends who align with my values, uplift me, and contribute positively to my growth. Their encouragement fuels my ability to keep moving forward with purpose.

At the same time, I recognize that you cannot pour from an empty cup. I make it a priority to step back, recharge, and care for my mental well-being. By doing so, I’m able to show up fully—for my family, my goals, and the advocacy work I am passionate about. Taking care of myself allows me to continue growing, serving, and making a meaningful impact.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I'm all about being action-oriented. If you want to do something, go for it. You will learn along the process - it's never something you'll know without trying, so just go for your dreams and chase after your goals. Failure is part of success. You will never land without failing, and it's part of the process. Keep moving to the next goal.

My objective is always to be better than you were last year and keep improving yourself. I believe that every woman can achieve educational attainment and success. You can be more than a mother and a wife and contribute to society. I empower other women to stand up and keep climbing up the ladder, regardless of where they come from.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity and strong ethical standards are at the core of who I am. I believe in treating others the way I want to be treated—the golden rule—and I lead with kindness, knowing that even the smallest act can have a lasting impact.

I also value the importance of a strong support system. I intentionally surround myself with family and friends who align with my values, uplift me, and contribute meaningfully to my growth. Their presence empowers me to stay grounded and continue moving forward with purpose.

Equally important is my commitment to mental well-being. I believe that you cannot pour from an empty cup, so I make time to care for myself in order to effectively serve others and continue the advocacy work I am passionate about. Maintaining that balance allows me to lead with clarity, compassion, and impact.
