Nakia M. Wilkes
Nakia Wilkes is a dedicated Clinical Mental Health Intern and Certified Addiction Drug Counselor at Brighter Start Health in Wilmington, North Carolina. With nearly a decade of experience in social work, she has developed extensive expertise in child protection, case management, and human services. Nakia has also served as a Qualified Professional, working with individuals facing intellectual disabilities, autism, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders. Her professional journey reflects a strong commitment to improving the lives of individuals and families through compassionate and evidence-based care.
Throughout her career, Nakia has held a variety of roles in the mental health and addiction counseling fields, including positions at L’evate Wellness and Recovery, Jacksonville Treatment Center, and TightLine Mental Wellness. She has led individual and group therapy sessions, implemented treatment plans, and provided education on relapse prevention and recovery strategies. Her work integrates evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI), ensuring clients receive comprehensive, person-centered care. Additionally, Nakia brings years of supervisory and management experience, emphasizing professional development, teamwork, and ethical practice.
Currently pursuing her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of the Cumberlands, Nakia maintains multiple certifications including Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC), Certified Peer Support Specialist Supervisor (CPSSS), and North Carolina Qualified Professional credentials. Known for her detail-oriented, compassionate, and solution-driven approach, she continues to advocate for individuals navigating mental health and addiction challenges. I attribute my success to my dedication to helping my patients achieve healthier, addiction-free lives and supporting them in creating lasting positive change.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is navigating bureaucratic barriers that make it difficult to access financial assistance for pursuing advanced degrees in Mental Health and Addiction medicine. At the same time, these challenges present an opportunity to advocate for more accessible support systems and resources for professionals seeking to expand their expertise.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The value that is most important to me, both in my work and personal life, is making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
