About Nancy
Nancy Dawson is a mental health professional whose specialty is co-occurring disorders, addiction, and psychiatric disorders. She has worked in the field since 2009. Her educational background includes a bachelor's degree in education earned in 1972, a master's degree in co-occurring substance abuse and psychiatric disorders earned in 2001, and a doctor of psychology degree earned in 2019. One of her most notable professional achievements is publishing her doctoral dissertation as a book. She attributes her success to paying attention to what was going on around her and advises being open to moving forward based on experience and interest while staying within one's scope of practice.

I think my success was paying attention to what was going on around me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be open to moving forward related to your experience and your interest.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just move forward, and don't be influenced negatively by what others may think or say. Don't be put off by negative reactions from others.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The opportunities are there's many, many folks that are searching for mental health interventions.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Recognizing an opportunity to help someone, and if not within my scope of practice, refer them to someone better qualified. Keeping within your scope of practice and referring if necessary from a mental health perspective.
