Her Story
About Nancy
My professional journey began in the mortgage and real estate industry, where I spent the majority of my adult life after graduating from college. I built a strong foundation in operations, quality assurance, and sales during those years. In 2019, I made a pivotal career change into technology because I was really drawn to automations and AI and how that was developing. I thought, wow, I have a really deep interest in technology. Even though I didn't have direct tech experience, I tried really hard to find a position to start up in that world, and I was so eternally grateful when I landed a job at TransUnion. Now I work a lot in process improvement and oversee a pretty large team of people who do various types of things. We work with customers directly, and some of our largest, most important customers are handled by my team, or a portion of them anyway. My main focus has been on how we can leverage the information in our systems to make our processes faster, better, more efficient, and more automated. That's been really fun and fulfilling work for me.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think it's understanding that not everybody receives information the same way. Sometimes, you have to adjust your communication style according to who you're talking to, so that your message is clear, and that you can understand one another. This has been crucial throughout my career because to make any type of change, you can't make change all on your own. You need the whole organization to want to change. So it's really about figuring out who your contacts are going to be, how to share your story, how to have it become their story, and building those relationships. Building relationships is the most important, because without that relationship, you really can't do much.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be the best version of yourself, be kind to people, no matter what position they hold. Always be kind and respectful, and understand that everyone's role within an organization is valuable. I also believe that getting in the door is the hardest part. If you can secure an interview, then it's up to you to make it happen. Sometimes it's hard to find a new position without knowing somebody that works there, so building relationships and networking is important. But once you get that opportunity, you have to be ready to show what you can do.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think the most challenging part in any role is always going to be getting buy-in. How to influence your peers, how to share your vision in a way that it becomes their vision. That's been definitely a challenge throughout my adult life and in any position that I've been in, because to make any type of change, you can't make change all on your own. You need the whole organization to want to change. So it's really trying to figure out who your contacts are going to be, how to share your story, how to have it become their story, and having, you know, and building those relationships. Building relationships is the most important, because without that relationship, you really can't do much.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Kindness and respect are fundamental to me. I believe in being kind to people, no matter what position they hold, and understanding that everyone's role within an organization is valuable. I also value continuous growth, both as a person and as a professional. It's so important to continue to grow and to meet people that are in similar situations as you are. In my personal life, my children have become my passion. It's incredibly rewarding to watch them grow with their love of sports, and while it's extremely time-consuming being their personal Uber, it's definitely my passion right now and it's so worth it. I also have a deep passion for helping animals, particularly dogs, and finding ways to make a meaningful difference in causes I care about.
