Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to not giving up and continuing to persevere, no matter what challenges come my way. As a social worker, I constantly think outside the box, always coming up with solutions even when I think I'm at a dead end. That mindset of never giving up and constantly finding new ways to help people has been the foundation of everything I've accomplished in my career.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to never stop learning. That's been crucial throughout my entire career. The second piece of advice that has guided me is to be kind to absolutely everyone you encounter in your life, because it will come back. You never know what someone is going through when you meet them, and that kindness makes all the difference in this field.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering social work is that social work has many different career options, so explore as many as possible to find the one you truly, truly enjoy. Don't just settle for the first path you encounter. Take the time to experience different areas of social work so you can discover where your passion really lies and ensure you go into the right field for you.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field right now is that other industries don't recognize all that social workers do. They place limitations on us and certainly don't financially compensate us for absolutely all the hats that we wear. It's frustrating because I was always told that my profession doesn't make money, but it does - we do the customer service part, we make people happy, and we come up with the solutions. Like teachers, social workers often buy things out of their own money so that others can benefit. That lack of recognition and fair compensation for the vital work we do has always been a source of frustration in this field.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I am highly ethical, highly moral, and very transparent in everything I do. After being in this career for more than 30 years, if you were to stop anybody and ask anyone about me, that's what they would say - I'm very transparent and honest, even in the most unfortunate situations. Honesty is the best policy, though I do sugarcoat some things to try to soften the blow, but it's always honest. Throughout my career, I've always felt like if my parents were alive, would what I said or did make them proud? That question was always in the back of my mind, guiding my decisions and actions.
