Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I definitely attribute my success to getting a college degree and just getting diversified in different areas. I went into medical claims and I've done so many different software systems and different positions, like accounting manager versus senior information systems manager. I've been in so many different fields, which I'm just... I like being diversified, I guess. I'm very adaptable.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say definitely specialize in what you're really interested in. Take... be much more educated in a certain area, because there's so many different areas now than even when I graduated. Kind of pick and choose a certain area that you really like, but make yourself available educationally for IT as a whole. If you really have a niche, pick that niche and do what you can while you're in college to take courses towards that. That really helps you a lot to get out and know exactly where you're going with your degree. Do you want to program, or... I mean, there's lots of different areas.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is the constant change in IT, which requires ongoing learning and obtaining certifications when necessary. The opportunity lies in the growing number of specialized areas in technology and the ability to leverage remote work to balance personal and professional life.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Definitely home and work balance, which I definitely found really early. I mean, my first child was born in 1990, and I was allowed to work from home twice, two times a week and then three at the corporate office, so I've been remotely working for a long time, like 36 years I guess. Once the kids went to bed, I would go back and work more because I had the flexibility. It's an adjustment, but once you adjust, I mean, it's just awesome.
