With a career in social services beginning in 2002, she specializes in geriatrics, medical social work, and discharge planning. Monk conducts psychosocial assessments, coordinates transportation and transfers, serves as grievance officer, and works extensively with insurance companies to secure services for patients. She earned her bachelor's degree from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, in 2002, and her master's in healthcare administration from the University of Phoenix in 2020. She volunteers with her church, homeless feeding programs, and groceries and clothing drives, and supports the Gift of Life Kidney Foundation. Monk attributes her success to God, her family, friends, and acquaintances. She advises that in social work, if you did not document, it did not happen, and encourages young women entering the field to focus on the reward of helping others and making a difference in people's lives every day despite good and bad days. Monk values seeing the person as a whole, not just the patient or diagnosis, and treating families and patients with respect to make them feel comfortable, especially in a nursing facility setting. She notes that the biggest challenges in her field involve limitations on services due to government cuts and insurance barriers, requiring daily fights with the system through documentation and hoops.

I attribute my success to God, my family, friends, and acquaintances who provide support.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is that in social work, if you didn't document, it didn't happen. Documentation is crucial and can sometimes save your job.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

There are going to be good days and bad days. It's not always easy and not about the money. In the end, look at the reward of helping others and pride yourself on making a difference in somebody's life every day.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges are limitations on services covered for patients due to government cuts and insurance barriers. You have to jump through hoops and send documentation to get needed things for patients. It's a daily fight with the system.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I value seeing the person as a whole, not just the patient or diagnosis, treating them with respect to make them feel comfortable and at home, especially in a nursing facility setting. Respect for families and patients is key.
