About Natalie

Natalie Gruchow is a passionate advocate for animal well-being and a seasoned veterinary industry professional based in Fargo, North Dakota. With nearly a decade of hands-on experience managing one of the region's largest small animal hospitals, Natalie built a deep understanding of the operational, human, and emotional complexities that define veterinary practice. That foundation propelled her into her current role at Fear Free, LLC — the recognized leader in animal well-being education — where she serves as Corporate Programs & Products Specialist. In this capacity, she cultivates and strengthens strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and other veterinary industry organizations, ensuring that corporate collaborations are meaningfully aligned with Fear Free's core mission of reducing fear, anxiety, and stress in animals. Her work bridges the worlds of education, marketing, and relationship management, helping to bring impactful campaigns and co-branded initiatives to life for veterinary professionals and pet owners alike.

Beyond her professional achievements, Natalie is a dedicated community advocate whose personal experiences have shaped a life of service and resilience. Having lived with multiple sclerosis for over 16 years, she channels that journey into active volunteerism with the National MS Society's Upper Midwest Chapter, including serving on the MS Walk Planning Committee. Her love for animals extends well beyond the workplace — she has volunteered with 4 Luv of Dog Rescue and Diamond in the Ruff Pet Rescue for over a decade, and previously founded a nonprofit dedicated to promoting responsible leash etiquette and its impact on animal safety. She also gives back through The Salvation Army, serving meals and participating in holiday outreach. A recent SCUBA certification speaks to her adventurous spirit and her refusal to let any challenge define her limits. Named an Influential Woman representing North Dakota in 2026, Natalie Gruchow exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose, grit, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of animals and the people who love them.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Natalie

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success is deeply rooted in who I am as a person. I survived a very difficult and abusive marriage, and coming out of that experience gave me an unshakeable clarity about how I want to live my life — and once I have that vision, there is no going back. I believe there is some element of luck involved, but beyond that, it comes down to grit, a strong work ethic, and never being afraid to start at the bottom and work my way up. Those qualities have guided me throughout every chapter of my life and career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most impactful guidance I ever received — and truly lived by — was to put myself out there and network. From my early twenties, whenever I heard of an opportunity to connect with others, I showed up. Those connections were not just social; they were career-defining. It was through networking that I was introduced to the hiring manager at the veterinary clinic where I would go on to work for nearly nine years. I can say with full confidence that without the relationships I deliberately built, I would not be where I am today.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My strongest piece of advice is to prioritize networking — and to start early. Do not wait until you feel ready or established. Attend events, introduce yourself, and invest in genuine relationships. The veterinary and animal welfare industries are relationship-driven, and the people you meet along the way can open doors you never anticipated. Showing up consistently and putting yourself in those rooms is one of the most powerful career moves you can make.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the most pressing challenges in veterinary medicine today is the emotional and mental burden placed on veterinary professionals — burnout and compassion fatigue are real and ongoing concerns. This is precisely why the work Fear Free does is so vital; our education on gentle handling and stress reduction helps alleviate that burden for both animals and the people caring for them. There is also a significant opportunity in expanding public awareness around responsible pet ownership — including something as seemingly simple as leash etiquette — which has a meaningful impact on animal safety and community well-being. Additionally, sustaining nonprofit and advocacy efforts in this space requires ongoing attention and resources, which remains both a challenge and an area ripe for growth.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Grit and perseverance are at the core of everything I do — professionally and personally. I also place tremendous value on compassion, both for animals and for people. Advocacy is central to how I show up in the world, whether that means championing animal well-being through Fear Free's mission, supporting those living with multiple sclerosis, or standing up for responsible pet ownership in my community. Above all, I believe in leading with purpose and never settling for less than what I know is possible.
