Her Story

About Natasha

Natasha L. Mason is an entrepreneur, artisan, and owner of Creations By N.L. Mason, LLC, an e-commerce business she founded in 2017 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Drawing on her creativity and years of professional experience, she designs and handcrafts unique soy candles, wax melts, and decorative products inspired by food. Her signature creations include hyper-realistic candles resembling sweet potato pie, cookies, donuts, fruit, cereal, and other treats, as well as diaper cakes and money cakes for special occasions. She operates primarily through Etsy and also participates in craft shows and custom orders.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Natasha built more than a decade of experience across dental assisting, customer service, office administration, and property management. Her seven years as a dental assistant provided her with technical skills in molding, mixing, pouring, carving, patient care, and maintaining confidentiality—skills she later applied to candle making and silicone mold creation. Her creativity was also deeply influenced by her grandmother, a seamstress and home-based entrepreneur whose example demonstrated the possibilities of building a business from home. Natasha continues to combine creativity, craftsmanship, customer service, and business management in growing her brand.

Faith is central to Natasha’s personal and professional journey. Following significant health challenges, she discovered candle making as a form of physical and occupational therapy and credits God with inspiring her to pursue the craft. She is passionate about using her creativity to encourage others and is pursuing training to become a certified minister, with aspirations to combine ministry, candle making, and educational classes. Through her business and mentorship of young women, Natasha encourages others to embrace their individuality, recognize their gifts, and create something meaningful from what they have been given.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Natasha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God. After coming off life support, I heard the Holy Spirit say I want you to start making candles. I used candle making for my physical therapy and occupational therapy while relearning motor skills. My business and everything I do is for His glory.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to be yourself and recognize the unique strengths you bring. Focus on what comes naturally to you—especially the things others may find challenging—and don’t feel pressured to follow everyone else’s path. Your uniqueness is your greatest asset, and your gifts will create opportunities for you.
