About Neelum
Neelum Jalil serves as a nurse educator at Chamberlain University in Chicago, Illinois, a role she has held since 2014. She began her academic journey completing a BSN in Education at Munderline College, which merged with Loyola, before earning her master's degree at North Park University in Chicago. Currently enrolled in a DNP program, Jalil remains committed to education rather than shifting into other areas of practice. She mentors STEM students through a 16-week program and volunteers with her church while making anonymous donations to support summer school and other needs around Christmas. Jalil attributes her drive to a desire for a productive life, including preparing formal lectures, introducing new strategies, and staying current with evolving practices in the field. She advises young women entering nursing to engage fully during clinical experiences, adopt a holistic approach, prepare for the real world beyond exams, and develop critical thinking skills from the start of their education.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I think you want to live a productive life. So at the end of the day I like a productive day where I'm meeting with the students or I'm well-prepared for a formal lecture or introducing something new a new strategy. We are evolving very rapidly and I want to keep in touch with what's new in the market. Critical thinking is so important in nursing.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
When going to clinical do not sit and hide from the instructor but get messy with it even if it is a diaper change or feeding. Our approach should be very holistic. Be prepared for the real world not just exams. Critical thinking needs to start from day one in nursing school.
