Her Interview

Ten minutes with Nerissa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to continuously learning every skill I can in each role I have held and never limiting myself to my job description. I have always looked for opportunities to expand my knowledge across different areas of the business, which has helped me grow professionally and prepare for leadership responsibilities. I also believe maintaining a positive attitude, embracing new challenges, and empowering others through mentorship and knowledge sharing have been essential to my success. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to learn from supportive leaders and mentors who encouraged my development and challenged me to see the bigger picture.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to never limit myself to the responsibilities of my current role and to continually seek opportunities to learn every aspect of the business. Embracing new experiences and expanding my knowledge has prepared me for greater responsibilities throughout my career. That mindset has also shaped my leadership style, inspiring me to mentor and encourage others by sharing my knowledge and helping them grow professionally.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to learn every skill you possibly can in your current position because every experience will prepare you for future opportunities. Never limit yourself to the responsibilities listed in your job description. There is no perfect workplace, so instead of focusing on challenges, look for the lessons they provide and use them to strengthen your skills. I also encourage others to share their knowledge, support their teammates, and contribute to an environment where everyone can grow and succeed together.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in transportation and logistics is navigating changing economic conditions that directly impact freight movement and operational demands. Leading diverse teams—particularly in remote and hybrid work environments—also requires intentional communication, collaboration, and relationship building to maintain productivity and team engagement. At the same time, these challenges create opportunities for organizations that adapt well to changing market conditions and for leaders who invest in developing strong teams through regular communication, mentorship, and continuous improvement.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I believe continuous learning, positivity, teamwork, and empowering others are the values that have guided both my career and personal life. I strive to approach every challenge with a positive mindset and view every experience as an opportunity to learn and grow. I also value treating every team member as an individual, recognizing their unique strengths, and creating an environment where people can work together effectively despite differences. Family, mutual respect, and helping others succeed are equally important to me and influence how I lead and build relationships.
