Her Interview
Ten minutes with Nia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my mentors who pushed me even when I was tired and wanted to give up. Specifically, Brittany Hicken has shown up for me in personal life, career, and academics.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
When you're passionate about something, you don't need to have a backup plan, because if you're passionate enough about it, you're gonna do it. I have lived by that advice throughout my education and career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always stand up. Speak up. Don't try to dim your voice or light just because you think that people are not going to agree with you. You have to be assertive as a woman and make your voice heard. Be persistent.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges include it being emotionally distressing especially in pediatrics home care, and constantly advocating for more funding. Opportunities include advocating to get your voice heard and seeing patients succeed and graduate from services, which is incredibly rewarding.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Accountability and empathy are most important. Holding yourself and your team accountable is needed in leadership, and empathy is essential in healthcare to operate successfully for teammates and community.
