Nicky Benitez

Nicky Benitez is an educator, school administrator, and entrepreneur with more than 26 years of experience in the field of education, including 15 years serving in leadership roles as a school principal and administrator. Throughout her career, she has been deeply committed to mentorship, finding her greatest professional fulfillment in supporting teachers and helping them grow in their careers. Her leadership philosophy centers on empowering educators and creating environments where both teachers and students can succeed and thrive.

In 2022, Benitez expanded her professional journey by founding The Insurance Principal, an independent insurance brokerage. Launching the business as a second career, she built on hands-on experience gained through years of exposure to the insurance industry while assisting with a family-run agency. Today, she specializes in group and individual health insurance as well as a range of commercial insurance products, including liability, workers’ compensation, and commercial and personal auto coverage. Known for her commitment to continuous learning, she approaches the industry with a growth mindset and a focus on helping individuals and businesses secure the protection they need.

While continuing to serve as a school principal, Benitez is steadily growing her insurance business and expanding the services it offers. Her long-term vision is to build a scalable agency that supports group business clients with comprehensive insurance solutions across commercial, general, life, and health lines. She aims to develop a team of trained independent agents who can operate successfully under her mentorship, allowing the business to run efficiently while maintaining the client-focused values that guide her work.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to motherhood. If it was up to me, I would be living in a shack in the Caribbean, next to the ocean, but I have two daughters, and I need to be a good role model for them and raise strong, happy, intelligent young ladies. Not just me as a mother, but also my mother to me - she was very strong and very strict, and that kept me in line. My memories of her, well she's still alive, but she was just very strong, and that's shaped who I am. I don't give up. I don't give up. Neither do my daughters - we have to keep it moving. You don't fall too far into the rabbit hole, you gotta get right out. That resilience and determination, that's what drives my success in both my careers.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

When building her insurance business, Nicky did not have a formal mentor. Instead, she relied on self-education, research, and professional legal guidance to establish the business independently. She was initially introduced to the insurance industry through her former husband, who worked in the field, but ultimately built her own business following their divorce.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Nicky encourages women to believe in their ability to build something independently, even without a traditional mentor. She believes success comes from curiosity, willingness to learn, and the courage to pursue opportunities outside of one’s original career path.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the insurance industry is helping clients understand complex policies and coverage options. However, this also creates opportunity for professionals who are willing to educate and guide clients carefully through the process.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are resilience, perseverance, and never giving up. I believe in being a strong role model, especially for my daughters, and showing them that you have to keep moving forward no matter what challenges you face. You don't fall too far into the rabbit hole - you gotta get right out. My mother instilled these values in me through her strength and discipline, and now I'm passing that on to my daughters. In my work, whether as a principal or running my insurance business, it's about mentorship and helping others succeed. I'm also deeply proud of my involvement with Team SOS Miami, a dragon boat racing team for breast cancer survivors, because it represents the fighting spirit and camaraderie of women who don't give up. These are women that haven't given up, and they just keep fighting - and that's the spirit I carry into everything I do.
