Her Story
About Nicole
Nicole Browning serves as Executive Director for College Track, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting first-generation college students in getting into and through college and into their first careers. With a career in educational leadership beginning in 2007, she started as a high school AP English teacher focused on students in marginalized communities before advancing to roles as assistant principal, principal, and professor. She later served as superintendent of a charter network where all charters were approved and students thrived, and she achieved the notable accomplishment of winning two California's Distinguished schools back-to-back. In 2015, she completed her PhD after earning both of her master's degrees from Cal State East Bay, where she later returned as a professor teaching educational leadership to other superintendents. Her primary focus remains supporting first-generation college students, developing leaders, and creating strong student-centered systems. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated.

01What do you attribute your success to?
My faith and my beliefs in supporting others. I have a great family. I just have such a great network of support.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Follow your passion. Your passion will lead you to everything that you're supposed to do, and be open to new opportunities.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
There's going to be highs and lows, but stay committed to the purpose of why you got into the field to begin with. Don't chase money. Chase your passion and your dreams, because they will always lead you to where you need to be. You can't lead someone that you don't love. And so, lead from love.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Funding for our most marginalized students. Our current climate, and how we truly define equity in action, not just discussing it, but truly define it. Ensuring that we are always student-first in our work. Create strong systems that outlive people.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Transparency, follow-through, integrity, vulnerability, and teamwork.
