Her Story
About Nicole
I started at Sotheby's in an entry-level role after graduating and worked there for about four and a half years learning about auctions and contemporary art. Since then I've been finance manager at Almine Rush gallery handling invoicing, payments, KYC checks, and financial operations. I also lecture on auction transactions at Columbia and CUNY.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Nicole
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my great professional network from school and colleagues who provided support, referrals, and advice early in my career, as well as my own resilience in pushing forward through challenges like the COVID job market and staying on the right path even when progress isn't linear.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be open to different opportunities and how a role may shift as organizational needs change, while also listening to your own interests and passions to guide your career trajectory.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be open-minded about opportunities outside the archetypical roles like specialist or sales director. Fine art needs people in marketing, finance, operations and other areas, so broaden your view of career paths available in the industry.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Rising costs of operating galleries due to economic fluctuations leading to decreased art buying, making it hard to maintain scale of operations. This has led to downsizing, fewer exhibitions, and less exposure for artists. Geopolitical issues and higher costs also impact business in certain regions.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Work-life balance is very important. I focus during work hours and avoid letting high-pressure situations or demanding clients affect me personally. It's important to keep work and the rest of life separate.
