Her Story
About Nicole
Nicole Chung is an author, poet, youth advocate, coach, consultant, and educator dedicated to empowering young people, families, and communities through advocacy, counseling, and education. As a former foster youth and adoptee, Nicole brings a deeply personal perspective to her work supporting children, teenagers, parents, and families navigating life transitions. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Oakwood University in 2011 and her Master of Science in Marriage, Family, and Couples Counseling with a specialization in trauma and crisis from Walden University in 2017. She is also a certified Life Coach, using her training and lived experience to guide individuals and families through behavioral, communication, and socio-emotional challenges.
Professionally, Nicole serves as the Counselor Coordinator for the Umoja special population program at Grossmont College, where she supports Black and African students in achieving academic success, transfer readiness, and degree completion. She provides counseling, mentorship, and resources that help students navigate their educational journeys while teaching a College and Career Readiness course each semester. Nicole also works with San Diego Youth Services as a Youth and Staff Advocate, supporting transitional-age youth, including former foster youth and young people experiencing homelessness. With more than 13 years of experience working with youth and extensive nonprofit experience, she specializes in youth engagement, trauma-informed counseling, mentorship, and advocacy.
Beyond her professional roles, Nicole is passionate about storytelling, creativity, and community service. She is a published author and poet who enjoys writing spoken word, reading, dancing, and exploring creative expression. Through her coaching practice, she works with blended families, guardians, and parents navigating divorce or family transitions, particularly focusing on the needs of children and young adults. Nicole serves her community through organizations including the African National Women’s Organization, San Diego Youth Services, and Park Takeover, and she continues to expand her impact as she prepares to pursue doctoral studies. Guided by faith, kindness, and a commitment to leading with love, Nicole remains devoted to creating opportunities and support systems that help others thrive.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success first and foremost to my relationship with God, followed by the love and support of my family. The young people I serve are my “why” and continue to inspire me to make a meaningful impact.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to be patient and trust the process. Everything will work out in the right time, and staying consistent, focused, and committed will lead to success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering my industry is to be patient and trust the process. The right opportunities will come at the right time, and the doors meant for you will open when they are supposed to. Stay prepared, keep growing, and trust your journey.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is funding. However, there are many opportunities through gaining knowledge, building meaningful networks, and taking the time to better understand yourself and your goals.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are kindness, compassion, and leading with love. As a Black woman in this industry, I have faced challenges, but I believe in treating everyone with respect and choosing kindness, even in difficult moments.
