About Nicole
Nicole Del Tio is an information governance professional based in Cary, Illinois, who currently serves as Information Governance Manager. She began her career in 1997 as a programmer / analyst for a large international retailer. Over nearly two decades there, she advanced through roles in IT, Audit, Strategy and Finance. She later brought her audit expertise to the insurance industry as an IT Audit Manager, leading risk-based audits and partnering with senior executives to secure agreement on corrective actions. Nicole then moved into information governance, where she built the function and team. She is responsible for shaping and carrying out the North American information governance strategy in support of both global and regional priorities. Her work includes building a data inventory framework, implementing an application and onboarding other functions to create alignment with the processing of data. She also coordinates retention and disposition efforts, identifies gaps, and guides the business through remediation. She holds a Certified Information Systems Auditor designation and has earned the Certified Data Privacy Solutions Engineer credential. She completed bachelor's degrees in Business Information Systems and International Business, with a Spanish concentration, at Illinois State University. Nicole has built her career in a male-dominated field, drawing motivation from those who questioned her abilities and using it to prove them wrong. She credits her current manager with believing in her and giving her the guidance and autonomy to build a new function and program. Although governance is rarely glamorous and her greatest challenge is gaining executive attention for its value, she remains committed to it. She guides her work by a firm commitment to ethics and to doing the right thing, while keeping her family her first priority. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, dancing, reading, and spending time with loved ones.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Nicole
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to determination in succeeding in my career. Throughout much of my career in IT, a field dominated by men, I had to work harder to prove myself. Many people doubted that I would succeed, and every time someone told me I could not do something, it motivated me to show them that I could.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I received was not to step into a pile of garbage, meaning I should not make someone else's mess my own. In practice, I tend to do the opposite, because I often have to step into the problem myself to understand the root cause so I can offer solutions and be a trusted advisor.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Do not let anyone else dictate what you can and cannot do. Build your own career, find what you are passionate about, and you will be successful.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
My biggest challenge is convincing executives why governance matters. Governance is a cost to any organization so I educate executives how governance leads to better compliance and less risk of fines. The work happens behind the scenes, yet it is essential, and helping people understand its importance is always a struggle.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being ethical and doing the right thing.
