Her Story

About Nicole

I've been working in the food industry for about 4 years, starting at Plybel's during my sophomore year in high school. This was my first job, and the Winchester location was a new store when I first started. I began as a regular employee, but was quickly selected to be one of the first shift leaders at the store. As a shift leader for around 3 years, I was responsible for closing, counting the money, and making sure everything ran smoothly when the manager wasn't there. This past summer, after deciding to take a break from in-person college and pursue online studies through UNH, I was promoted to manager. Now I run the Winchester store, managing 30-plus employees and handling everything from scheduling and hiring to customer service. My main responsibilities include delegating tasks, making sure shift leaders are on top of counting correctly in the morning and at night, managing cash tips distribution, and creating a good environment for customers. I make sure all the employees know the importance of having a positive attitude. I also have my SurfSafe certificate and allergy certification, which will be important as I continue in the food industry, whether at restaurants or in bartending.

Ten minutes with Nicole

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The most challenging part of my role is definitely dealing with call-outs and scheduling. A lot of people are in high school and college, so they go away for college, and when people call out for their shifts, it affects the schedule. I have to start contacting other people, sending out messages, and making sure that this only happens one time and not again. Managing everyone's schedules when you have so many employees in different life stages is really the biggest challenge I face.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Creating a good environment for customers is really important to me. One thing that I make sure all the employees know is the importance of having a positive attitude here. I believe that maintaining a positive atmosphere is essential, both for the team and for the customers we serve.
