Her Story

About Nicole

After transitioning from a different industry, I joined a precious metals refinery and immediately gravitated toward the intricacies of risk management. I saw a gap in how we handled counterparty complexity in Latin America and stepped in to bridge it. After realizing this was my professional calling, I approached leadership with a clear vision for the department’s growth and my place within it. For 15 years since, I have focused on the precious metals sector, developing a reputation for building compliance frameworks for diverse market players, navigating regulatory requirements and balancing strict oversight with the practical realities of maintaining a profitable enterprise.

Ten minutes with Nicole

01What do you attribute your success to?

From a practical sense, what's made me effective is my ability to balance regulatory requirements with the reality that it takes to run a business. Compliance can't operate in a vacuum - it has to be integrated into how the business functions. I've always focused on building relationships across teams, understanding operational pressures of each of the businesses that I've worked with, and designing programs that people can actually execute. I believe that combination of structure and practicality is what drives the real impact that I can bring to the table. On the personal side, what makes me successful has been the role models that I've had in my life. My parents both came from nothing, and they worked relentlessly to provide us with opportunities that they never had. Growing up witnessing their hard work and their perseverance, made succeeding the only option. If they could make it then there's no reason why, with all the opportunities that I had before me, I couldn't do the same or more.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Do it scared and do it before you’re ready.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

To any woman entering the precious metals industry: lead with conviction from day one. Do not wait for a sense of 'perfect readiness' before pursuing a leadership role or increased responsibility. Much of my own professional growth was forged in the absence of a roadmap, where I had to build the path while walking it. In an industry defined by its complexities, integrity is your most valuable asset. Especially in compliance, your reputation for ethical consistency and your ability to build high-trust relationships are what will ultimately sustain your career. Step into the arena with confidence even if you have to find it along the way, and never be afraid to take the leap.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges right now is that many organizations are growing faster than their compliance infrastructure can keep up. We’re seeing increased pressure from banking partners and regulators, which often brings compliance gaps to the surface quickly. At the same time, that creates a significant opportunity. Organizations that invest in building scalable, well-integrated compliance frameworks early are not only better positioned from a risk standpoint, but also more competitive because strong compliance is increasingly tied to access, credibility, and growth.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In both my professional and personal life, I prioritize objectivity and integrity. I’ve always gravitated toward a fact-based approach, which is a massive asset in compliance. When a situation becomes emotional or 'triggering,' my first instinct is to return to the evidence. Decoupling emotion from the decision-making process ensures that the path forward is grounded in reality. Operating this way has allowed me to foster deep, trust-based relationships because people know my word is backed by facts. To me, integrity means choosing the ethical path over the easy one, every time. I also try to keep a long-term perspective: difficult moments or challenging people are just opportunities for 'professional grit.' They are temporary, but the growth and character you gain from navigating them are permanent
