She approaches her work with a people-first mindset, focusing not only on outcomes, but on ensuring individuals feel valued, supported, and empowered in every aspect of their lives. Her path into this field is profoundly personal. As a young mother to her son, Nikolas, who was on the autism spectrum, Nicole experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating systems, accessing resources, and advocating for the support her family needed. After his passing at the age of 15, she made the life-changing decision to return to school—pursuing higher education with purpose and determination. That journey became a turning point, transforming her lived experience into a lifelong commitment to advocacy and service. Nicole is driven by resilience, compassion, and a deep belief in the power of inclusion. She is known for building meaningful relationships and meeting individuals and families where they are, offering both professional guidance and genuine understanding. Her ability to connect through both personal experience and professional expertise allows her to support others with authenticity and intention. At the heart of Nicole’s work is a vision for a more inclusive and connected community. She aspires to expand her impact by developing innovative programs and ultimately creating an all-inclusive, expressive library in honor of her son—a space where storytelling, accessibility, and community come together. Through her work, she continues to honor Nikolas’s legacy while helping others feel seen, supported, and empowered.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my parents and the values they instilled in me from a very young age. I was raised in a proud Mexican household where discipline, hard work, and respect were foundational. My father served in the military throughout his career, ultimately achieving the rank of General, which showed me firsthand what leadership, commitment, and perseverance look like. Equally impactful was my mother, who modeled compassion and generosity in everyday life. She was the kind of person who would bring food and drinks to students who couldn’t afford them, and our home was always open—a place where family, friends, and anyone in need felt welcomed. That balance of structure and compassion shaped who I am today. When I became a mother myself, my parents continued to guide me with both support and accountability. My mother made it clear that while they would always be there for me, I was responsible for building my own path. That expectation pushed me to work hard, stay focused, and take ownership of my future. Because of how I was raised, I approach both my life and my work with an open, nonjudgmental perspective. I believe in seeing people wholeheartedly—whether they are family, a neighbor, or someone I’ve just met—and treating them with dignity and respect. My work ethic, my compassion, and my commitment to others are all a direct reflection of my upbringing, and that foundation continues to guide everything I do.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received came from my mother, who taught me the importance of taking full responsibility for my choices and following through, regardless of the circumstances. She made it clear that while support would always be there, it was up to me to put in the work, stay committed, and build my own path. I also had a manager who once told me, “This world isn’t always easy, and what you put into it matters.” They encouraged me to go beyond just completing tasks and to take pride in my work—to give my best effort and trust that it would lead to growth and opportunity over time. That perspective stayed with me. Those lessons have shaped my work ethic, my resilience, and my approach to growth. I’ve learned that success isn’t about doing more for the sake of doing more, but about being intentional, taking ownership, and showing up with purpose in everything you do. Today, I carry that same message into my leadership. I encourage others to believe in their potential, take pride in their work, and understand that the effort they put in can open doors they may not yet see. I strive to lead by example, creating a culture where people feel motivated, supported, and inspired to grow into their best selves.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to lead with both confidence and compassion. This work requires not only knowledge and skill, but also heart. You have to believe in the value of what you bring to the table while remaining open to learning from the people you serve. Don’t be afraid to take up space, use your voice, and advocate for what you know is right. There will be moments where you feel challenged or uncertain, but those are often the moments that shape your growth the most. Stay grounded in your purpose and remember why you chose this work. It’s also important to build strong relationships and not be afraid to ask for support. This field is built on connection, and the more you collaborate and learn from others, the stronger you will become. Most importantly, stay authentic. Your lived experiences, your perspective, and your passion are what make you impactful. When you lead with those, you not only grow in your career—you create meaningful change for others.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in this field is navigating systemic barriers, including funding limitations and complex processes that can make it difficult for individuals with disabilities to access services and meaningful employment opportunities. These challenges often create delays and gaps in support, impacting not only individuals, but their families as well. At the same time, these challenges present a powerful opportunity for advocates and service providers to think creatively and push for change. There is growing momentum around inclusion, and with that comes the ability to develop more innovative, person-centered approaches that better meet the needs of those we serve. By strengthening partnerships, increasing awareness, and continuing to advocate for more accessible systems, we have the opportunity to create lasting impact and expand opportunities for individuals with disabilities to thrive in their communities.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are inclusion, respect, and acceptance. I believe every individual deserves to be treated with dignity, regardless of their background or abilities, and I strive to reflect that in both my personal and professional life. I also value hard work, discipline, and accountability—principles that were instilled in me early on and continue to guide how I show up each day. At the same time, I recognize the importance of maintaining a strong work-life balance, ensuring that I am able to give my best to the individuals and families I serve while also being fully present in my own life. Family is at the center of everything I do. I am intentional about making time for my wife and daughter, especially as I watch my daughter navigate adulthood and new life transitions. As our family prepares for a potential move and a new chapter, I am reminded of how important it is to slow down and truly take in each moment. I also deeply value the relationships I have with my extended family and friends—they are a constant source of support, connection, and strength. Being an advocate is central to who I am. My lived experiences have shaped my passion for supporting others, particularly parents navigating challenges similar to those I have faced. I am deeply committed to creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered, and I carry that responsibility with both purpose and heart.
