Her Story

About Nicole

I've been in the hospitality and event industry for about 9 years now, and I'm currently a senior event planner, a position I've held since December, so about 6 months. Before this, I was a restaurant events manager at an upscale 5-star resort for about two and a half years, where I sold and planned large party restaurant events and handled semi-private and private dining. Prior to that, I worked as a director of catering and sales for a hotel and restaurant for about 2 years, selling and planning weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, corporate events, and smaller social events. I also worked at a hotel doing corporate conference planning as an admin, and my first job out of college was as an event coordinator at a wedding venue. My goal was always to move beyond hotels and restaurants to gain experience in other industries, so I moved to the corporate side and now I'm working on the nonprofit side, which I actually enjoy a lot more. I got into this field after doing an internship in college at a hotel for about a year. I really liked the different departments I was working in, and the event part of my rotation was the best, so I spent most of my time in the catering and events department just to learn about the industry. After college, I was offered a job at a wedding venue to get my foot in the door, and I've kind of stayed in it ever since.

Ten minutes with Nicole

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say just not staying in one spot, and always wanting to achieve higher goals, and move up in my career within that industry and wanting to try new things.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just don't feel uncomfortable talking to people, because talking to different people is gonna help you move further in your career.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say finding the right venues for the event that we want to host is one of the biggest challenges, because the area that I live in sometimes it's hard to find venues. On the opportunities side, there are so many networking events in the area, so being able to attend different events in the area to meet different people, especially from different venues that we would want to host events at, is a great opportunity. That's where I kind of start to build those relationships beforehand at events.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say having a good work-life balance is really important to me, and not overworking myself, because I've done that before and that just burns people out. Having good communication, both in my personal and professional life, is also critical. And in my professional life, working together as a team is something I really value.
