Her Story

About Nimrah

I founded a consulting company that works at the intersection of sports and Muslim communities. I create Muslim experiences at different sporting events and work with Muslim athletes on community impact initiatives. When athletes want to do something in the community, I work with them to help make that happen. I didn't go to school for sports - that's not my background - but I love it. I was trying to make the transition into sports for a while, but I just wasn't having luck getting into the field through regular avenues, so I decided to try something myself. I started working with the Houston Rockets Muslim Family Night, a themed night where they bring out Muslim families. It was a great success with about 1,200 people coming out, and there were some really cool experiences for them. I started posting about it, other teams wanted to do something similar, so I made it into a business. My work includes a nonprofit side where I try to give access to people who may not have a chance to watch these sporting games. For some people, a $20 ticket for five people ends up being a significant cost, so I work to get them out to experience these games they may not be able to attend otherwise. I also work with athletes on whatever they're passionate about, whether it's feeding the homeless downtown, doing dinners for them, or bringing kids out to games. Recently, I've been working with kids from Palestine who have been medically evacuated to my city - they're either missing limbs or burned and are here for medical treatment. We're giving them experiences of what life is like here, which has been a really fun project.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Nimrah

01What do you attribute your success to?

At the end of the day, it's just to make our world a better place than we came in, especially now that we have kids. I feel like there's a different perspective, especially as a woman - you see it through a different lens. Whatever we're trying to do is ultimately the good that we're trying to leave behind for our kids.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that if they see a need for anything in whatever field they're in, or if they see a need not being met or a gap, just go for it. I didn't start off talking to all these teams and being in the same room with some of these players in a day - it took me a while, but I had to start somewhere. Someone needs that need that you are seeing, and someone else is probably also seeing that gap, and they're just not doing anything about it. If you start and do something about it, then you will be that person to create whatever needs to be created, whether it's a new process at your day job if you work an 8 to 5, or if it's a new business venture, or whatever it is. Look for things that are not being met and processes, and just go for it.
