About Nina
I have served in the United States Air Force for 20 years as a nurse. Throughout my career, I have held multiple roles including flight nursing in Afghanistan, staff work focused on executive-level policy and plan development, and now as Director of Medical Management at our medical group, a position I began in August. In my current role, I meet with the equivalent of the board of directors every morning to go through operations and advise on our daily workload. We are responsible for all beneficiaries on base and off base, partnering with community partners to provide the best care possible. I oversee case management, disease management, and special family members. What brings me the greatest satisfaction is taking care of a very unique patient population - a subset of an already niche community within the military. Many of the patients I care for now were in Afghanistan when I was there, so they understand and I understand what they experienced and the sequelae of that experience. I am a systemic thinker who likes to look at systems and processes to determine how we can be more efficient in both the care we deliver and the patient's time, optimizing their experience and innovating to contribute to more positive patient outcomes. I'm very much a 'make things better than you left it' type of person. I am retiring from the Air Force this fall and looking to transition into people operations and HR, where I can focus on matching the right talent and skill set to the right job.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think the biggest challenge is being heard and listened to. They're heard, the words are absorbed, but the comprehension is not necessarily done, in that this is a male-dominated career field, and typically very masculine males who join the military. So it takes quite a bit of internal fortitude to overcome some of the barriers that are in place, and learn to tune out the negative feedback that's not necessarily accurate.
