Her Story
About Nini
Nini Davis is a Boston-based Singer, Writer, and Creator who has spent over two decades developing a deeply personal and independent path in music. Known for crafting emotionally rich and authentic musical experiences, she blends storytelling, vocal artistry, and creative direction to produce work that reflects both resilience and individuality. Her music catalog, including her album Got the Blueprint, is distributed globally across major platforms such as Apple Music and Amazon, and highlights her commitment to independent artistry and self-expression. Her journey in music began at the age of 8, working alongside her brother, a composer, who introduced her to the studio environment. By her early teens, she was already being hired by producers to sing and gaining early exposure to the professional music industry. Through these experiences, she worked with major industry professionals and learned the complexities of the business behind the scenes. Over time, she made the decision to step away from environments that did not align with her values, choosing instead to protect her creative integrity and personal well-being. Around 2007, she began fully stepping into her voice as a songwriter, drawing directly from her own life experiences and creative vision. As an independent artist, Nini built her career from the ground up often without resources or support releasing and promoting her work through determination and persistence. Inspired by early independent success stories and platforms like TuneCore, she continued creating music while overcoming significant personal and professional challenges. She has collaborated with producers internationally, including in Japan, the UK, Jamaica, and United States , and has fully self-funded her recordings, branding, and creative direction. Despite facing major health setbacks that impacted her ability to perform, she continued releasing her work and expanding her reach. Her album is now distributed to over 60 stores worldwide, and she has been featured in Soul Central Magazine (Issues 86 and 65), received extensive radio play, and reached Top 10 rankings on ReverbNation multiple times. Alongside her artistic work, she continues to balance family responsibilities and personal caregiving, all while remaining fully hands-on in every aspect of her creative career—from songwriting and performance to styling and promotion.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Nini
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the work and dedication, not talent or looks. People don't know about the talent until they click on and listen. I had nothing - no one gave me anything. It's because I just kept going, I just kept trying things, I kept reworking. What I learned from working with major producers and people behind the scenes taught me how to help myself instead of taking advantage of me. I had the experience from many years ago from other major people, and I learned about contracts and copyrights - these little things cause a lot of headache for people who are not aware. You have to be prepared to invest in yourself because nothing is free. I worked 12 days in a row, I promoted constantly when other people were enjoying nice weather, I made my own clothing, I took my own pictures, and I put everything together professionally even when I didn't own a computer and had to go to little spots here and there or just use my phone. Even when everyone told me I couldn't do it, even when I had no support from people who only cared when they could gain something from me, I just kept going. When I became so ill that I could no longer make sound, I still released my album with the songs I had already recorded because I said, what if I didn't even try? I look back and say, what if I didn't even try? Intelligent people learn from their experiences, and that's how you get an idea of what you can do. I just made it happen, using skill and knowledge and creative thinking and a Vision of what i could do with what I had . The Process has a process , most effort went into the music and having each song mastered . a person can have a ton of money and still not know how to put together a project that is professional . I did not have the time to sew the outfit i wanted to .so i used the outfit I already made . My hair is natural locs and My N logo is a copyright created years prior , I love aqua and blue , to be honest when you`re doing something to aid your living and its a part of who you are you put your whole heart into it . although this album did not come together in the traditional way .people just see an album in stores they have no idea what it took . My friend Released his album and i asked how he did it ..It was Through a Major Indie distributor called Tune core . What i truly attribute to my success I listened to my inner being and found a way . I am so happy i did and Grateful to all that made the choice support me
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received came from one of the producers I worked with, WMS the Sultan. When I was facing my health crisis and couldn't sing anymore but still wanted to release my album, I was worried about time that had passed , I asked him what I should do. He simply said, 'Just do it!' That advice was so powerful because a lot of people have their views and opinions, and that's one thing people should never listen to, because it's coming from their personal fears . When I was hesitating about whether to release my album under such difficult circumstances, asking if I should just go ahead, he told me to just do it. That gave me the courage to move forward even when I had no idea what would happen, even though I had experience in music as a singer. When you're doing something from yourself, for yourself, you don't know what to expect, but you just have to try.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the music industry is to understand that no one escapes certain types of experiences in music - the industry often expects women to do things and be a certain way, and you're meant to be dumb. But you have to be intelligent and learn from those experiences. When you're working with another company, a lot of times they're just interested in what they can get from you, but intelligent people learn from it. You have to understand contracts and copyrights because these little things cause a lot of headache for people who are not aware. You have to be prepared to invest in yourself because nothing is free. Don't listen to people's views and opinions when they come from their lack of thinking. Use what you have and make it work - I didn't own a computer, so I would go to little spots here and there or use my phone. If you know how to put things together professionally, then you can do it. Take all that time when other people are enjoying themselves and promote, promote, promote. Work with people who teach you how to help yourself instead of trying to take advantage of you. And most importantly, don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something. Everyone told me I couldn't do it, but I just kept going, kept reworking ideas . What if you didn't even try? You have to try, or you'll never know what could happen. let the music lover decide .
I strongly advise women new to the industry to protect your work .invest what you can in your projects , everything can be negotiated . You can construct your contracts Agreements are best , ask questions reach out to people that are doing what you`d like to do ,there`s too much free information online . reality shows are entertainment only . Don`t work with people that cant explain why ,or get angry ,call you difficult because you have questions made a decision that does not align with their agenda , This is a common tactic . Invest in your self to protect your work ,your name should if things don`t not work out you can continue with your career , So you can begin again .The company wont care about what happens to you no matter how talented or sexy you are , its Business ,You must make an agreement if working or recording with friends , pay your friends . be prepared when you arrive at the studio especially if your not paying time , Your character matters depending on how professional the people are that you`re working with .
I don`t have any advise if you are blindly seeking fame . you can famous and homeless at the same time .
I only wanted to make a living doing what I love, many years ago you had to rely on someone else seeing your value in order share your passion with the world .
everyone is someone and you have to know your worth .
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
1.Learning and understanding Ai .how to use it .overwhelmed with info .
2.There are so many opportunities , And too much information
3.I am looking into another field of interests that will require learning something completely new still in the same category .
4. Getting out of my own way. :)
5.I can`t disclose everything ,but an offer to try something i didn`t think i was qualified for ,a professional in that field of movies voice overs loves my personality and random spur of the moment videos . I am very interested .
6.It is important to focus on where i am now being in the moment not being distracted . .preparing myself .
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important values to me are my kindness and being a good person. I have to be honest, or else I won't feel comfortable. I believe in being my authentic self and fighting for the things that are important. I don't want to mention people that I don't want in my life going forward - I want to move forward with integrity. I believe in giving people name credit for their work because a lot of people don't want to give people the credit for their work, but that's important. I value people who are supportive in genuine ways, not just when they stand to gain something from you. It's easy for people to support you when they stand to gain something from you, but when you're no longer working with them, then they really don't care about you at all. I value being in touch with more positive people who think the way I think - be a good person, be an honest person, fight for the things that are important. I'm inspired by people on LinkedIn who are inspiring and think this way. What matters to me is that people love and enjoy my music - that's all I really care about. I also deeply value taking care of my mother, even though it's difficult. Despite all my stress and challenges, I`ve been knocked down many times and here i am , I try to focus on how many times I`ve made it through , eventually you learn what your strengths are and starts with what you say to your self talk ,I have the ability to laugh ,smile and treat people how i wish to be treated , most people assume my life has been so great . circumstances mold you they should never control you . I believe everything is possible , My future plans are to work with supportive like minded people ,if not for the internet being inspired by others I`m seeing new possibilities , i love the music fans that talk to me like a human being , They are the dream ,when i write i am thinking about the listener how they will receive my lyrics , hopefully they can relate and understand .
on my First live video interview in New York Video city that was my mission to undo the stereotype that i must think I`m better because I`m talented , I am aware that I have zero control over what others assume , I do have control over how i show up in this world . I learned to let go of toxic people . its not easy ,but eventually its vey necessary for peace , I love solo adventures I am a proud nerd and I absolutely love enjoying movies like Star Wars ,Marvel, Martial Arts .Top Gun I recharge best when I`m by myself because ideas come to me . It`s is important that people respect others privacy , I don`t want to know anything that is none of my business and most of the time people talk at me ,never to listen or learn or ask a question . Sure I didn`t grow up with the advantages that most have , I am proud of the person i am i love my personality so it easy to embrace others differences . I pay close attention to what people do ,not what they say. I no longer look for my sincerity in other people or expect reciprocity I don`t allow anyone to dictate to me what type of woman i should be . you are not free if you allow others to tell you what how to think, I have a song called Reign Girl Power track #2 on my album its a favorite for both men and women its a fun energetic songs about the different ways women bring value to the world beauty comes in all styles shapes and sizes ,honestly I don`t separate women and men we are all just people . I have a couple male friends we have a lot in common, the true meaning of friendship , sure I`ve dealt with my share of chauvinists , but I don`t have to prove anything to them , If a person is kind and supportive and respectful ,that is all that matters .
