What do you attribute your success to?
I would have to say, first and foremost, my faith in God, and secondly, just my desire to really do the best and have the best possible outcome. I really look at compliance as preventative work - as a lawyer, people only call you when things have already gone wrong, but I see compliance as a way to prevent those problems from happening in the first place. If we do it correctly, we're not going to need those lawyers. My passion for training comes from believing that in order for people to be compliant, they need to understand what the rules are and have a good foundation of who to contact without any shame. I literally get paid to tell people what's compliant and what's not, and to think about the scenarios they see every day and point out how they can protect themselves.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received, I actually thought was an insult at first, but it turns out to be very true. When I was transitioning from being a full-time lawyer to compliance, my mentor told me to just make sure that I keep enough in my savings account so I can walk away from a job if I need to. This is a position where you make really difficult choices, and we find that it's very true in compliance, because there are people who went to jail for business decisions that were made, and you have to wonder if they felt the pressure of needing the paycheck. Having that financial cushion gives you the freedom to make the right ethical choices without being compromised by financial pressure.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest opportunities in my field is positioning compliance as a driver of growth, especially in venture-backed healthcare companies that need to scale while staying compliant. At the same time, a key challenge is implementing regulatory changes in a way that remains practical and business-friendly, while effectively managing both organizational and individual legal and accountability risks.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Outside of work, I value staying connected to my interests and community. I enjoy gardening, even when certain crops don’t turn out as expected, as it keeps me grounded and patient. I also place importance on being involved in social organizations where I can meet new people, build relationships, and stay engaged in a supportive and active community.
