Her Story

About Nita

I am a quantitative epidemiologist, data science executive, and infectious disease modeling expert with over two decades of experience at the intersection of public health, risk analytics, and biosecurity, currently serving as Senior Quantitative Epidemiologist and Modeling Expert Consultant at Verily via Pinnacle, a role I have held since December 2025, where I lead product strategy for Sightline data insights, translate complex environmental and epidemiological data into actionable insights, and contribute to proposals and strategic initiatives that shape product direction and organizational impact.

Prior to this role, I served as Senior Director and Head of Epidemiology and Modeling at Ginkgo Bioworks for over three years, where I provided leadership on digital biothreat intelligence, transit network and airport risk assessment, computational epidemiology, and extreme events modeling, served as principal investigator and technical subject matter expert on multiple funded projects with customers including the CDC, DOD, and Gates Foundation, and sourced and contributed to funding opportunities leading to over twenty million dollars in funded projects and product sales.

Before joining Ginkgo, I spent nearly seven years at Metabiota in progressively responsible roles, including Chief Executive Officer, President, and Board Member, where I led a multi-million-dollar revenue company with over one hundred globally distributed employees and offices in the US, Canada, Cameroon, and DRC, successfully closed the acquisition of Metabiota's data and analytics technology and team by Ginkgo Bioworks for eleven million dollars, and was awarded as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum. I also served as Vice President of Data Science, Head of Data Science, and Director of Infectious Disease Modeling, where I guided the creation of high-throughput quality assurance and processing pipelines to handle millions of epidemic and pandemic simulations.

Earlier in my career, I spent over ten years at AIR Worldwide in progressively responsible roles, including Principal Scientist, Senior Scientist, Principal Analyst, Senior Research Analyst, and Research Analyst, where I directed the development of metapopulation epidemiologic models to simulate global emergence and spread of pandemic influenza, and managed life and health risk research and modeling teams. I also served as Research Assistant at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Special Pathogens Branch for nearly two years, where I managed and analyzed data pertaining to rodent ecology and human health impacts.

I hold a Master of Science in Public Health in Epidemiology from Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, where I was a member of Delta Omega, and a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and History from Yale University.

Across my career in epidemiology, data science, and biosecurity, my work has been driven by a commitment to using data and modeling to understand and mitigate infectious disease threats, build resilient health systems, and protect global health security. Whether I am leading product strategy, developing computational epidemiology models, or serving as CEO of a biosecurity company, I bring a strategic mindset, deep technical expertise, and a dedication to translating complex data into actionable insights that inform policy and save lives. I am proud of the work I have done throughout my career and excited to continue advancing the field of quantitative epidemiology and biosecurity.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

There's still a gap between data being generated and model results and translating those insights into real-world decision-making, often due to organizational adoption of new data and technology. There's a lot of opportunity to make better early warning systems to detect where epidemics are starting and prevent large-scale catastrophes, including environmental monitoring and better diagnostics that can reach larger populations.
