Ten minutes with Norma

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success can be attributed to hard work and tenacity.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was that it doesn't matter if you change the world, it matters that you try.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't give up. Academia can be brutal and unforgiving, but if you are passionate about your teaching and your research, the rewards will come. I LOVE teaching and writing and reading, and I have absolutely no regrets that I chose to be a professor and a writer.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Right now the biggest challenge AND opportunity lies in the field of AI. I would also say that the dismantling of the many programs we worked for as people of color is a terrible blow. The challenge is to survive in the hostile environment that the current changes are creating.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Most of all, truth and hard work are the essential values in my work and in my personal life.
