Her Story
About Norma
I finished school with a degree in advertising and went with an art scholarship, so I had a lot of art design and marketing education. I kind of stumbled across a company that was in promo and really didn't know much about it at the time since it was still very much an unknown industry with that closed model. The more I learned, I realized there's tremendous opportunity for people to step in and develop the business and take it wherever they wanted to go. I started with a large company on the distributor side, going direct to companies, and really learned everything about that business. Then I had an opportunity to flip to the supplier side where I learned the whole merchandising, sourcing, importing piece of the picture, and that's where I really found my favorite aspect of the business because it's just a larger scale. I enjoy helping all of the distributors succeed and the scale of that level of business. For family reasons, I flipped back to the distributor side because I could run my own business and balance things with family. As a new empty nester, I was able to flip back again to the supplier side where I really enjoy that different scale. I've kind of done it all back and forth.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would definitely tell her to get a mentor, find someone, or one or two people that could really help her. I think that does make a big difference, depending on where she steps in, whether she's coming in as a distributor or on the supplier side of the business and wanting to build a career there. I would tell her to really choose wisely where she aligned herself to work. There's a lot of resources to help, and my main focus would be just where does she want to go, and then to align well, because there's a lot of rises and twists and turns that can come along. I think the most important step is to align yourself well.
