Exploring why adult women are being diagnosed with ADHD at increasing rates and how misunderstanding of female presentations has led to years of unrecognized symptoms, misdiagnosis, and the urgent need for evolved clinical care.
Her Story
About Dr. Nyla
Dr. Nyla Harris is a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of Bridgewell Cognitive Health, a Dallas-based private practice specializing in evidence-based therapy and psychological assessment for anxiety disorders, OCD, ADHD, autism, and neurodivergent-related challenges across adolescence and adulthood.
Her work is defined by a focus on complex and often overlooked presentations, particularly in high-functioning individuals and women whose symptoms are frequently misinterpreted as anxiety, perfectionism, or burnout. Dr. Harris is known for her ability to identify underlying neurodevelopmental patterns that traditional models of care often miss, and for delivering structured, outcome-oriented treatment grounded in approaches such as CBT, ERP, ACT, and DBT-informed interventions.
Prior to founding Bridgewell Cognitive Health, Dr. Harris served as a neurodivergence specialist within a group practice setting, where she received referrals for ADHD, autism, and learning-related concerns and trained other clinicians to better recognize nuanced presentations. This experience highlighted a consistent gap in care: many individuals were being treated for surface-level symptoms without a clear understanding of the underlying clinical picture.
Her clinical perspective is also informed by lived experience. After becoming a mother, Dr. Harris was diagnosed with ADHD, providing firsthand insight into how neurodivergence can remain unrecognized in high-functioning individuals until life demands exceed previously effective coping strategies. This dual lens of clinical expertise and personal understanding informs her approach to care, which emphasizes diagnostic clarity, precision, and sustainable change.
Bridgewell Cognitive Health was founded to provide a more specialized, high-quality standard of care for individuals navigating anxiety, OCD, neurodivergence, and related conditions. Services are offered in person in Uptown Dallas and virtually across Texas, with a focus on delivering individualized, evidence-based treatment for clients seeking depth, clarity, and meaningful progress.
In addition to clinical work, Dr. Harris contributes to professional and community education through speaking engagements and ongoing collaboration with other providers, advancing awareness of how ADHD, autism, and related conditions present across diverse populations.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dr. Nyla
01What do you attribute your success to?
A willingness to specialize deeply rather than stay broad. Early in my career, I recognized that many clients were not improving because the underlying clinical picture was being missed. Focusing on neurodivergence and complex presentations allowed me to provide more precise, effective care. I’ve also been intentional about building a practice aligned with clinical integrity, not trends, which has shaped both outcomes and reputation.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do not build a career around what is expected. Build it around what is needed.
That shift changed how I approached both clinical work and business decisions. Instead of trying to fit into existing systems, I focused on where gaps existed in care and how to address them with depth and precision.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Develop a strong clinical lens, learn how to think diagnostically, and be willing to question standard approaches when they are not producing meaningful outcomes. Your credibility will come from your ability to see what others miss and to treat it effectively.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges is the gap between awareness and precision. There is significantly more awareness around ADHD, autism, and mental health broadly, but that has not always translated into accurate diagnosis or effective treatment.
The opportunity is to raise the standard of care by focusing on diagnostic clarity, evidence-based treatment, and understanding how neurodivergence interacts with anxiety, burnout, and relational dynamics.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Clarity, integrity, and depth.
In my work, that means ensuring clients understand what is actually driving their experiences and providing treatment that is aligned with that understanding. Personally, it means creating a life that is not built on constant overextension or performance, but on sustainability and alignment.
