She currently teaches UX/UI Design at Ivy Tech Community College Columbus and through IvyOnline, where she supports students through hands-on, human-centered learning experiences. In addition to her teaching role, she has worked for over 10 years as a Graphic Marketing Designer for a family-owned beverage company, Bartholomew County Beverage Co, where she creates marketing materials, signage, and branding assets. She is also a 2026 Excellence in Online Teaching Award recipient, recognized for her commitment to student engagement and innovation in online education. Her academic and professional journey reflects both persistence and growth. She earned her associate’s degree in Design and Visual Communications from Ivy Tech Community College Columbus in 2025 after previously studying UX/UI Design and Psychology at Purdue University. She is also an alumna of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and an alumna of the National Society of Leadership and Success, where she held leadership roles in student organizations. Her career path includes returning to teach at the same college where she studied, bringing real-world industry experience directly into the classroom. Her professional philosophy centers on human-centered design, inclusivity, and making complex systems more accessible through thoughtful UX/UI solutions. She is especially passionate about supporting diverse learners and integrating real-world design challenges into her courses. Beyond her professional work, she is active in advocacy for Alzheimer’s awareness and the Pancreatic Cancer Association, and she enjoys creative hobbies such as jewelry making, paper quilling, and other hands-on crafts. She is most proud of earning her college degree while balancing family and career responsibilities, and she continues to inspire students through her dedication to education, creativity, and community impact.

Ten minutes with Olivia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the incredible people who have supported me throughout my journey, my professors, mentors, colleagues, friends, and family. Their guidance, encouragement, and belief in me have shaped who I am both personally and professionally. I also believe success comes from maintaining a mindset of continuous learning. Whether I am teaching User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) Design or working as a Graphic Marketing Designer, I am always striving to innovate, grow, and create meaningful experiences that put people first. I am grateful for my students, who inspire me every day to become a better educator and designer. Watching them develop confidence, discover their potential, and create solutions that improve people's lives is one of the most rewarding parts of my career. Above all, I am thankful for my family's unwavering support, which allows me to pursue this work with passion and purpose. My goal is to continue giving back through education, advocating for human-centered design, and empowering the next generation of designers to create thoughtful, usable, and impactful experiences for the communities they serve.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is that it's okay to take a break and work on yourself. You cannot be your best for others if you are constantly spreading yourself too thin. One exercise that has stayed with me is drawing three circles labeled Personal, Home, and Professional. In each circle, I identify my goals, desires, challenges, and pain points. It helps me recognize where I need to grow, where I need to set boundaries, and where I should focus my energy. That advice has shaped the way I approach both my career and my life. As an educator, designer, wife, and mother, I have learned that balance isn't about doing everything, it's about doing the right things well. By investing in my own well-being, I am better equipped to support my students, serve my community, contribute to my workplace, and continue creating meaningful experiences that positively impact others.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay true to who you are, know your value, and never let anyone define your potential. In the design field, people are hired not only for their technical skills but also for their character, creativity, collaboration, and unique perspective, so build a strong support system, invest in your professional network, set SMART goals, and never stop learning because your authenticity and commitment to growth will always set you apart and become your greatest strengths.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in my field is helping organizations recognize that great design is about people, not just products. Whether I am creating marketing materials or teaching User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) Design, I see the growing demand for human-centered thinking. Businesses are realizing that usability, accessibility, and thoughtful design are no longer optional, they are essential for creating meaningful customer experiences and building lasting relationships. At the same time, one of our greatest challenges is preparing the next generation of designers for a rapidly evolving industry. Technology continues to advance at an incredible pace, making lifelong learning more important than ever. My goal is to bridge the gap between education and industry by giving students authentic, hands-on experiences that build both technical skills and confidence. I want them to leave the classroom knowing how to solve real problems with empathy, creativity, and purpose while making a positive impact on the communities they serve.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my work and personal life are authenticity, integrity, loyalty, respect, reliability, accountability, and living in the present. I believe in treating every person with kindness and empathy, following through on my commitments, and always being willing to learn and grow. Whether I am teaching students, designing marketing materials, or collaborating with colleagues, I strive to lead with honesty and a genuine desire to make a positive difference. One lesson I have learned is that you cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself and loving yourself first allows you to show up fully for others, your family, your students, your coworkers, and your community. I believe success is not measured solely by accomplishments but by the impact you have on others. If I can help someone discover their potential, gain confidence, or improve their experience through thoughtful, human-centered design, then I know I am making a meaningful difference.
