Her Story
About Olivia
I've been working in the Salesforce field for about 10 years now, and my journey started in an unexpected way. I became an accidental Salesforce admin while working at a nonprofit, and I quickly realized that Salesforce was where I wanted to take my career. From there, I helped found a small consulting firm where I worked as a system administrator for many different nonprofits and associations. Over time, I focused on building the team and developing both a managed services department and a consulting department, really honing in on building other people's careers. About four months ago, I transitioned to my current role as a consultant for nonprofits in the Salesforce world. My main area of expertise is helping nonprofits solve problems with technology. I spend a lot of time trying to understand their business processes. Just like every other company, they want to be lean, they want to be efficient, and they want to get as much money in the door as possible. Helping them use technology to do that is really fulfilling. A typical day for me involves meeting with different departments at different nonprofits, talking to them, sharing what Salesforce can do, and solving problems they might be experiencing. I spend a lot of my time actually configuring on the platform, building out solutions, testing those solutions, and then sharing them. What I find most rewarding is that I get to help nonprofits fulfill their missions. It's kind of my way of giving back, and knowing that what I'm doing is paying it forward to other people, especially for nonprofits tied to health, wellness, and helping feed people, the impact is really cool.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a lot of support from my family and my faith. It's one day at a time, just trusting that the Lord has me on the right path, and relying a lot on my family to support me during maybe crazy times when things get hectic. My husband takes the kids if I need to commit to something, and that support system has been essential to everything I've been able to accomplish.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to always take a step back and look at the bigger picture. With an industry like Salesforce, it's very easy to get caught up in the details and to feel overwhelmed, and whenever you're anxious, you're most likely not making the best decisions. If you can take a step back, try to look at the bigger picture, and re-center yourself, then things become a little bit more clear. I have a lot of clients that will bring me something like, 'I just want a report,' and I ask them, 'Okay, well, why? What are you going to do with that? Where are you getting this from?' Usually, anytime they're requesting something like that, there's something deeper behind it. Maybe they don't trust their data, or there are things happening in the system that are causing the reports to not work the way they want. Taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture really does help ground why you're building and what you're building for.
