Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ottaamissiah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my great-aunt, Livonia Rome, who was the first nurse in my family and my greatest inspiration. Over the past 40 years in nursing, I have built my career around compassionate patient care, clear communication, and strong collaboration with patients, families, nurses, and healthcare leaders. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to explain complex medical concepts in a way that patients and families can easily understand, helping them feel informed and confident in their care.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received was to always strive to make a meaningful difference in healthcare. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors—many of them nurses—who encouraged my professional growth and lifelong learning. Their guidance inspired me to stay actively involved in organizations such as the American Nurses Association and the International Congress of Nursing, where I was honored to be selected as a 2024 Nurse Scholar. From my education at Atlantic County Vocational School in New Jersey and the International College of Nursing in Florida to now pursuing my doctorate at Kentucky State University, I’ve learned that investing in your education, seeking strong mentors, and remaining committed to serving others are key to a fulfilling career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Never give up and always stay educating others and be compassionate

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me are service, compassion, integrity, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Whether in my professional role or through volunteer service, I am committed to improving health outcomes, supporting my community, and advocating for equitable care. I’m grateful to have been recognized with honors such as Board Member of the Year for DMPs of Color, Diversity and Leadership Fellow through the Black Nurses Association, Black Nurse of the Year for community service, and Hospice Champion of the Year. These recognitions reflect my dedication to serving others and my passion for giving back through organizations that advance healthcare and support underserved communities.
