Her Story

About Oumou

My journey in this industry has been challenging but rewarding. I chose to start this work because I wanted to make sure that the news that's not reflected on mainstream media is something that I would be able to do. As the founder of my website, I produce the ideas, I also film them, and also make sure the details are correct and factual. I do more research just to make sure I'm giving up-to-date information, and then I proceed with uploading that information on the site. My actual job outside of the website is as an immigration manager. What I love most about my career is that I have autonomy over my time, and I'm also doing something positive, something that doesn't negatively impact the world. One of my most notable professional achievements is being respected in my community for the job that I do. I want to highlight media and news that mainstream media doesn't highlight. As a Muslim woman and an African woman, there's just news that positively or negatively impact us that I don't see reflected in the news.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Oumou

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my faith and my dedication to myself.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My former professor, whose name is Milton, pushed me to actually start this work. He has been a great source of strength and inspiration for me personally. Anything from him just motivating me to keep going has been the best career advice I've received.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay true to your beliefs, don't waver.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Internally, the challenge is just to actually keep going, sometimes it could get busy with life. Externally, I just don't focus on challenges, especially if they're negative. I don't put energy into it. I'd rather use that energy elsewhere.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Dignity and liberty.
