Her Story
About Padmini
I am a Director at Applied Materials with 15+ years of experience spanning enterprise data platforms, database technologies, and semiconductor manufacturing. I began my career in India as a software engineer specializing in databases and SQL technologies, and grew into leadership roles with global experience across the UK, Germany, and the United States.
Since relocating to the U.S. in 2012, I have progressed from technical lead to manager, senior manager, and now Director. I currently lead enterprise data platforms for the company, with responsibility for platform strategy, architecture, and execution at scale. My role focuses on driving modern data designs, evolving legacy architectures, optimizing costs, enabling business outcomes, and building high‑performing teams.
My expertise is deeply rooted in database and data platform technologies, complemented by a strong commitment to continuous learning. I hold certifications across Databricks, Cloudera, Oracle, and SAP HANA, along with formal project management and leadership training. I actively participate in leadership and women‑in‑technology forums, including Watermark, to foster growth and inclusion.
Outside of work, I enjoy global travel, hiking, and Indian classical music. I am also a parent to two young children, ages four and six.

Ten minutes with Padmini
01What do you attribute your success to?
I owe my success to the unwavering support of my family—without their encouragement and support, this journey would not have been possible. I am especially grateful to my mentors who recognized my strengths early on, believed in my potential, and consistently guided me with honesty and care. Their mentorship helped me navigate challenges, build confidence, and grow into leadership roles. I have also been fortunate to have close friends who stood by me during critical moments and offered support when I needed it most. Each of these individuals has played a meaningful and essential role in helping me reach where I am today.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The most valuable career advice I received from my mentors was to stay current with technology, remain resilient, and practice patience. One of the most consistent pieces of feedback I receive today is that I demonstrate strong patience and approachability—that people feel comfortable reaching out to me. I am able to stay composed and steady in critical situations, which I consider one of my core strengths. This did not come naturally; it is a direct result of my mentors’ guidance, their belief in me, and the principles they instilled throughout my career..
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to believe in yourself, set clear goals, and stay focused on them. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or seek guidance when you need it—success is rarely achieved alone. Confidence, clarity, and the willingness to reach out can make a significant difference early in your career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is the pace of technological change—particularly around data platforms, cloud adoption, and AI—while simultaneously managing cost, scale, and legacy systems. Keeping platforms secure, reliable, and future‑ready requires continuous modernization and talent upskilling.
At the same time, this presents a significant opportunity. Organizations that invest in modern data architectures, automation, and strong governance can unlock faster insights, better decision‑making, and competitive advantage. For leaders, the opportunity lies in balancing innovation with execution while building resilient, adaptable teams that can evolve with the technology.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Staying true to myself is a core value in both my professional and personal life. I believe integrity and authenticity guide good decisions and build trust over time. Equally important to me is passing strong values to my children—teaching them empathy, resilience, and respect—so they grow up grounded and confident. These values shape how I lead, how I collaborate, and how I show up every day.
