Her Story
About Paola
I immigrated to the United States from Venezuela 10 years ago with my husband, seeking to build a new life. I started my career selling life and health insurance, but my path changed when an assistant manager named Lucy Santos saw something in me that I didn't see in myself. She approached me about becoming a leasing agent, and even though I told her I didn't speak English well, she insisted she would teach me and train me. I initially said no, but five minutes later, I came back to her office and asked where I could apply. That decision transformed my life. For the past 7 years, I've been working in property management, and for the last 2 years, I've served as a community manager with Hawthorne Residential Partners. I work with both affordable and luxury communities, though currently I focus on luxury properties. My philosophy is that we're not just renting homes, we're creating communities and meaningful experiences for people. I believe in helping residents through difficult times, whether that's carrying their grocery bags, supporting them through personal struggles, or mobilizing the entire property to help families in crisis. During Hurricane Milton, I helped a family who lost everything in a fire by getting them an apartment ready the next day and organizing donations from our entire community. That experience, and the recognition I received from my company for living their culture of 'leave it' by creating something for others, represents what I'm most proud of in my career. I lead by empowering my team to be themselves and grow in their own way, providing support and guidance without micromanaging. When my team members get promotions, I feel we did it together. I'm still learning English every day, and my accent creates conversations and connections with people. I believe in loyalty, integrity, honesty, and communication as the foundation of success, both at work and in life.

Ten minutes with Paola
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my team and the experiences we create together. We work with all our ideas together, and we feel that we are doing things a little bit differently than others, and that's why we're where we are right now. We're not just renting homes, we're creating communities where people feel cared for and connected. My team creates genuine experiences with people, and we act differently than other properties in our market. When my team members grow and get promotions, I feel like we did it together. I also believe that having the support of the right people has been crucial. Lucy Santos saw something in me that I didn't see in myself, and that changed everything. I surround myself with people who believe in me, and I try to be that person for others. I show up every day with high energy and a genuine desire to help people, whether they're residents, staff, vendors, or just people passing by my office. I think my success comes from staying true to myself, not listening to comments that say I don't have the power to succeed, and just going for my goals and dreams every single day.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be yourself. That's the best advice I've ever received, and it's what guides me every day. I don't try to be anyone else or make my team members be like me. I just stay true to who I am, bring my authentic personality to work, and let others do the same. It doesn't matter what people outside think about me, I just go for my goals and show that I can do my things. I know that I'm doing well, and I believe in my own power even when others might not see it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just keep going. Never listen to anyone who says that you don't have the power to succeed. Just keep going, show up every single day, and don't listen to other comments. Go for your dreams, go for your goals, go for your career, and you will be succeeding. Get the support of the right people around you. That advice is what I listen to myself every single day. It doesn't matter what people outside think about me, I'm just going for my goal, and I show that I can do my things. It doesn't matter if people doubt my power, I am here and I am doing what I am doing because I know that I am doing well. I'm sorry, but it is what it is. You have to believe in yourself and prove your leadership and strength, especially as a woman in this industry.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge in my industry right now is the competition. In my market, we have so many properties around, so many new buildings going up all the time. But I believe that if you have your brand, if you have really good customer service, and if you are doing things differently, it doesn't matter how many competitors are outside. People will see you as a good opportunity to work with. It's challenging every single day for us here in the market, but I'm super glad that my team creates an experience with people, and we act a little bit different than others. That's what's important to me, helping my team succeed and helping them create this experience while understanding why we are doing this. We're not just renting homes, we're creating communities where people feel taken care of. It's more than just a rental environment, it's much more than that. When you focus on creating that genuine community experience and connection, you stand out from all the competition.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are loyalty, integrity, and honesty. I really love people being honest. But above all, communication is the key of everything for me. In my regular life and in my office, in my work, communication is the key of success. Without clear communication, people can't understand each other, and so much can get lost. I also value helping others and creating genuine connections. I believe in supporting people, whether they're my residents, my team members, or anyone who passes through my office. Everyone who comes to my office has an experience with me, and I want that experience to be meaningful. I value empowering others to be themselves and grow in their own way, rather than trying to make them be like me. And I value showing up every single day with high energy and a genuine desire to make a difference in people's lives.
