Her Story

About Patricia

I've been in the medical field for over 10 years, with most of that time focused on medical billing. The opportunities for growth in the Medical Field are vastly growing and have opened several doors for me along my career. Currently, I work at our local CAH hospital in Greensburg, Kansas, where I have been working to bring billing back in-house. Most medical facilities outsource their coding and billing, but our hospital is reversing that trend and want everything brought back in-house. I've built the billing department from the ground up and hired an amazing team. Come this August, all billing will be back in-house, saving thousands of dollars monthly for our small hospital. I'm extremely proud of the work we're doing because we're doing something that so many hospitals haven't done. Bringing billing back in-house is a huge undertaking, but the expense of savings and increased customer service make it worth it. I hope that by being featured, other hospitals will see that it's possible and more will start to bring billing back in-house and build their billing departments. Providing in-house employees for your patients to talk to regarding concerns and questions makes a large impact for all those involved in the patient's care and puts your facility one step above the rest.

Ten minutes with Patricia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I am an advocate for continuous professional development through hands-on learning. My approach is resourcefulness; when faced with a challenge, I use every available tool—from tutorials to webinars—to obtain a solution. I see the process of 'trial and error' as an essential path to success, where setbacks serve as learning points for future success. This is one of my greatest strengths, allowing me to evolve in this industry.

Furthermore, I take pride in having built a high-performing team by identifying raw potential. I believe in the value of on the job training and am a strong believer of hiring for character and 'trainability.' By fostering an environment where diverse strengths are celebrated and collective growth is prioritized, I ensure that every team member has a meaningful seat at the table.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Keep going; don't quit. The most difficult times of our careers are often the most transformative, offering a chance to grow ourselves through persistence. Learn from the journey. Every obstacle is simply an invitation to move forward with greater strength and expanded expertise.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage everyone to embrace the challenge of new opportunities. Every road block leads to professional growth. Remember that your strengths bring value to the table that others on the team may not possess; diverse perspectives are what make a team resilient. Always be working on building a robust professional network. Whether through conferences or informal outreach, connecting with others in this industry allows us to exchange ideas and solve problems more effectively. Shared expertise is one of our greatest assets—always build that community (and support) amongst each other. We are all navigating this industry together.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

As the medical field continues to grow, billing remains a stable and vital function, though it isn't without its hurdles. The primary challenge today is the lack of a universal standard among the continuously growing number of insurance companies, each with its own unique processes. However, these obstacles are manageable. By remaining persistent and leveraging every available resource—from webinars to latest industry research—we can navigate these changes and maintain high standards of patient and provider support.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I am authentic in my personal and professional manner. I don’t believe in adopting a 'customer service persona'; instead, I bring my genuine self to every interaction. I believe in patient care, this builds a foundation of trust. Whether a patient is having a great day or a difficult one, they deserve a real human connection. By being relatable and sincere, I can better understand their emotions and provide more meaningful, empathetic care.
