Her Story

About Patricia

I am a teaching instructor at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where I have been working full-time for 17 years in the academic industry. I teach courses in the Masters of Public Health and Masters of Health Administration programs. My main areas of expertise include health informatics, healthcare delivery, technology innovations, operations, and administration. My most notable professional achievement is that my former students and former staff have become national leaders and are moving healthcare in the direction for health equity and better outcomes. I hold two master's degrees, a Master's of Business Administration and a Master's of Management, as well as certifications including AMCAHIMS and CHPDT (Certification in Digital Transformation). Work is not work for me - it's helping others do what they want to do, and that's my passion.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Patricia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hearing people, as well as listening. You have to listen to people, but you actually have to hear what they say and they don't say. It's about truly understanding people on a deeper level, not just the words they speak but the meaning behind them and what they're not saying as well.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I ever got is always start with the idea of yes, and only say no if you absolutely can't. The answer should always be yes, unless there's a reason you can't say yes. This approach has helped me stay open to opportunities and possibilities throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The best advice I ever got, which I would pass along, is always start with the idea of yes, and only say no if you absolutely can't. The answer should always be yes, unless there's a reason you can't say yes. This mindset of openness and possibility will serve you well in this field.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is that we have an elderly population growing, and healthcare is expensive. It needs to have better outcomes more efficiently and more effectively. So we need to optimize technology to do healthcare better. This is both our greatest challenge and our greatest opportunity in the field right now.
