Her Story

About Paula

I've been in the transportation and logistics industry for about 12 years now, and it's been quite a journey. I started out working in a warehouse in the heat, loading and unloading trailers, and moving into a corporate job has been one of my proudest moments ever. For the past 10 years, I've been with the same business in transportation and logistics. I began in the accounts payable department, then moved to Mode Transportation where I worked in the vendor department, taking care of new onboarding carriers, setting up their profiles, getting to know our new carriers, and making sure they were okay to be moving loads for us. After that, I was moved to the compliance department, which is what I do now as a Compliance Admin - this will be my second year in this role. My day-to-day involves monitoring our carriers to make sure they're not doing any fraudulent activity or double-brokering our loads. I schedule auto checks to make sure they have valid insurance and that we're not on expired insurance, and I make sure we have new COIs. I also use Carrier 411, a system where we get reports from carriers - that's where we find out if a carrier double brokered a load, meaning they sold it or gave it to someone else for cheaper than what we paid for. I have to go in there, pull the reports, go into our system, and DNL (Do Not Load) the carrier because they're not good for our business. I also answer questions, handle emails, deactivate old employees, activate new employees and agents - my role involves many different things, so I do a lot during the day.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't give up! Sometimes the road gets a little tough, and you stumble, but you have to get up and keep on doing it. Just don't discourage yourself, just keep on going. Keep going until you reach your goals, and then if it takes long to reach them, just keep on, keep moving. We have to keep moving forward because it's tough for us women out here sometimes. You still come across some men that are like, oh, you're not made for this business, or you're not allowed to do this in a man's world, but we always gotta prove ourselves that we can do it, and we can do as better as they can, or much better. And just keep moving forward.
