Her Story
About Payal
I've been in tech for 23 years, working in software development, product management, and program management across both federal contracting and commercial sectors. Currently, I work for Amazon, where I manage large-scale programs at AWS. Essentially, I'm managing their cloud deployments globally for all the commercial cloud deployments and infrastructure. AWS has regions, and those regions are through which they dispense cloud services, so my team manages the deployment of those regions. My experience as a program manager for several decades has helped me succeed at this job. What I attribute my success to is being very focused - whatever challenge I take on, I put my best to it and I go all in. I'm learning, I'm doing whatever it takes to be successful in that role.

Ten minutes with Payal
01What do you attribute your success to?
I'm very focused. Whatever challenge I take on, I put my best to it, and I go all in. Because I'm learning, I'm doing whatever it takes to be successful in that role. That focus and commitment to fully investing myself in whatever I'm working on has been key to my success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is balancing empathy with business needs. It's about managing people's expectations while maintaining empathy, but then also keeping the business side in mind, so not over-indexing on any one end. You need to find that balance between caring for people and meeting business objectives.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think knowing your space is very important - being comfortable in what you're doing. Don't do it just because it gets you money, or because you think that's what you should do, or that's what everyone else is doing. Just find your footing. Find that space that interests you, that you feel like you would be successful in, and then go all in. Because if you try to go all in in something that you're not interested in, or you don't think you will be successful long-term, it's just gonna cause a lot of resentment.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest opportunity right now is getting more efficient through AI, GenAI, and learning tooling - figuring out how to use that tooling to make your day-to-day life much simpler. It's not just about using AI as an afterthought, but making AI seamlessly part of your job. That way your time can be freed up just to make decisions, and not to really find the data to make those decisions.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Hard work is very important to me, as well as being thorough and well-prepared. I believe in doing your research and doing your study before you make a point - being data-driven in your approach. These values guide both my professional and personal life.
