Ten minutes with Perla

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my team, prioritizing the value and growth of each team member and creating an environment where they are supported, empowered, and able to excel.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to remember that your team is the one that makes you shine. Since I work in housekeeping, I've learned to take into consideration each individual and make sure they shine. Another piece of advice that has stuck with me is to never get too big for your bridges. It's about staying grounded and remembering where you came from, not letting success or position make you forget the people who helped you get there. This advice has shaped how I lead my team and interact with others in my field.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise young women entering my industry to truly love what they do, as success in housekeeping comes from taking pride in your work and having a genuine passion for serving others.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field right now is finding people, specifically finding housekeepers with pride. You have to love what you do in this industry. Housekeeping is an art, and you have to love cleaning and love serving others. It's not easy flipping 14, 15, or even up to 25 rooms depending on the property and brand you work for, whether it's a luxury hotel or a smaller property. The hardest thing is finding those housekeepers that do it with pride and don't just come in for a paycheck. That's really the biggest struggle we face in keeping a full staff.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are being humble and recognizing when recognition is due. I believe in acknowledging when something is wrong or when you're not perfect, because none of us are perfect. I value being true-hearted and having a big heart about everything I do. Humility keeps me grounded and helps me connect with my team in an authentic way. These values guide how I lead and how I treat the people I work with every day.
