Her Story

About Phalynn

My career journey has been shaped by incredible mentors and a willingness to learn and grow. I started in the oil and gas industry in 2013 with Come and Go convenience stores, beginning as an overnight cashier and quickly working my way up through various leadership positions over eight and a half to nine years. I was given the opportunity to move to the Front Range of Colorado to run my own store, which was a pivotal moment in my career. After Come and Go sold to Maverick, I decided to try something new and spent about two years in small box grocery, but I realized it wasn't for me. I returned to what I love - the oil and gas industry - joining HT&A (Haskell Thompson & Associates) on the executive recruitment side, and I absolutely love it. This is a very respectful organization where we really elevate the recruitment process from middle management to C-suite level. In my role, I handle the full recruitment cycle, from sourcing clients to speaking with C-suite executives and stakeholders. I don't just fill checkboxes - I really cultivate an understanding of the company's culture and what type of candidate they're looking for, including strengths outside the typical job description. I spend my time sourcing candidates using Recruiter LinkedIn, elevated AI resources, and our incredible CRM system. Our president, Haskell, has taught me how to perfect the recruitment process, and the process we have here is almost bulletproof. We know everything about the candidate by the time we're through our vetting process. My work is really people-centric - it's about getting to know each person, and even if they're not a good fit for the current role, I build a pipeline of candidates I'm ready to work with when another opportunity pops up. I've already had one promotion in my two years with HT&A, and I have another one right around the corner.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think being a good student and finding a really great mentor is really important, no matter where you go, in any industry. It's very influential to be humble yourself to learn. Always be willing to learn, because that is going to help elevate you in any field, even if it's not career-specific. Finding a good mentor and learning, and having that mindset of 'I don't know everything' - you will get so much further. Surround yourself with the people where you want to be, because they will elevate you there. If you stay around the same type of people that you're in, that's where you're gonna go, right? If you want to elevate, if you want to rise, and you want to be a successful woman or any successful person in your career, find somebody that's in the position that you want to land in, and make them your mentor, because they're going to help you get there.
