Phylis West Johnson

Professor of Sound and New Media at San José State University and former Director of the School of Journalism & Mass Communications, where they launched the Immersive Storytelling Lab and modernized curriculum and technology. Scholar and editor in sound, audio media, and virtual worlds, co-founder of Resonance: The Journal of Sound & Culture, and author/editor of six books, including a 2022 release on the future of journalism and emerging tech. Previously spent 26 years at Southern Illinois University and worked in radio as on-air talent, producer, and manager across major markets. Holds a PhD from Southern Illinois University and a master’s degree from Texas A&M University.
