Her Story

About Phyllis

I've been in the electrical field since 1997, and I started my own business, Lady Electrical Company LLC, in 2019. As the owner and electrical contractor, I handle everything from bidding and estimating to project management, scheduling, and overseeing projects. Sometimes I'm hands-on, working in the field myself. I do everything a business owner does except for payroll, accounting, and legal work. My most notable achievement is starting this business and growing it to more than 10 employees. I went to school with my brother, not knowing what was involved, and then one of the guys we went to school with found out about the trade and informed me about going to apply. Once I applied, I got in it and I liked it. It was very intriguing. I like to do different things, and the electrical trade keeps me moving. There's always something to learn, and every day is different. I'm very motivated by my calling to help people. If a customer calls and needs assistance, I like to help them whether they can actually afford the cost of what I'm doing or not. That's just what I like to do.

Ten minutes with Phyllis

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my motivation and drive, and God's encouragement. I'm doing what I've been called to do, what I consider my calling. I'm very passionate about helping people, so if a customer calls and needs some assistance, that's just what I like to do. I like to help people, whether they can actually afford the cost of what I'm doing or not. That's just something that I like to do.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is don't be afraid to say no. I've learned that every project is not meant for me, and to never give up.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay encouraged and keep pushing. If this is for you, no one will be able to take it from you. Whatever obstacles come about, just know that you can get through anything that comes your way. Just stay strong and be encouraged.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge for me is acquiring projects. Sometimes being accepted can be challenging. But I don't let that stop me because I know what I'm doing, I know the trade, and I've got to keep pursuing and keep pushing.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My values most important is my family. And then work is just to be successful, to leave them something to carry on.
