Her Interview
Ten minutes with Ping
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success comes from personality. It is not easy to stay in the field for 30 years with many failures and disappointments. You need to be honest and respectful to the people you work with, have a goal, love your job, and work through difficult periods to achieve success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I have been lucky to have a good mentor. My PhD advisor was patient and let me try and make mistakes when I was young. Supervisors trusted me and gave opportunities. Tough bosses taught me how to deal with people and understand where others are coming from. All my advisors helped make me a more mature and accomplished scientist.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology is good for women because women have test, duration, persistency, accuracy, and make good observations. It is a good field that is still booming with applications, good pay, and career development. Do not be discouraged by obstacles in the early stage as capability will be rewarded.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The industry is growing but has challenges with advancement of science like AI, regulations by government, opinions, political concerns with US relationships to Europe or China. It is a complex rude industry with many factors. Opportunities include it being a booming industry where you can work for life, continuously learn, feel proud of contributions to new medicine and technologies, and it pays well to raise families.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Parents are a live example and most important for kids. We taught our kids to be persistent, patient, do the best. Things in common no matter the career: be honest, respectful, persistent, and do your best in all work.
