Portia Gerald is a dynamic culinary entrepreneur based in Clinton, Maryland, whose career reflects a powerful blend of resilience, service, and creativity. A proud military veteran, Portia began her professional journey in information technology, where she developed expertise in networking, security, and team leadership while working in the military sector. Her passion for teaching and community impact led her to serve as an Information Technology Instructor and Program Manager at Melwood, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities. In these roles, she not only taught technical and professional skills but also contributed to horticultural programs and mentorship initiatives, embodying her belief that success is built through collective support and opportunity.

Driven by her lifelong love for food and meaningful connection, Portia transitioned into the culinary world, where she now thrives as a personal chef and entrepreneur. Her hands-on experience as an Assistant Lead Chef and Head Cook sharpened her culinary expertise and deepened her commitment to excellence in food service. As the founder of her own culinary venture, she combines creativity with purpose, aspiring to open a brick-and-mortar establishment that addresses food insecurity by redirecting surplus food to those in need. Her work is rooted not only in culinary artistry but also in advocacy, particularly for underserved communities and individuals with disabilities.

Portia’s journey is deeply personal and profoundly inspiring. Raised by her grandmother and single father during his military service, she credits her upbringing with instilling values of authenticity, compassion, and perseverance. Her story—from being told her dreams were unattainable to becoming a business owner—fuels her mission to uplift and empower others, especially Black women pursuing their ambitions. Through her voice, her business, and her unwavering commitment to service, Portia Gerald continues to encourage others to trust their intuition, embrace their light, and pursue their goals with confidence and purpose.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

All day, every day, my mama and my dad. My dad, he was a single father taking care of me and my brother. I love how, even though it was hard for him, he never gave up. And my mama, she is a firecracker. They are authentically themselves. My grandma has been the same since I was toddling, and I love that because she just gives you real, raw, authentic reactions and emotions. I feel like that's something that is dissipating a little too much in this world - the realness of who people are. To be authentically myself and be able to feel good about it is something that I love about me, and it's all because of those two.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't dim your light. Keep shining. And stay educated.
