Priya Vejayan, MD, is a healthcare professional with a diverse background as a physician, healthcare operations leader, author, podcast host, and the founder of OnTheBeatMD. Her interest in medicine started in childhood, motivated by a desire to assist others and enhance lives through healthcare. She began medical school at age 17 at the Crimean S. I. Georgievsky Medical Institute in Ukraine, completing six years of training and becoming fluent in Russian while working with patients in clinical settings. After graduating, she returned to England to obtain her medical license and pursued postgraduate training in trauma and orthopedic surgery.
Although her career eventually shifted away from direct patient care, Dr. Vejayan remained dedicated to healthcare. Currently, she is the Practice Operations Manager at Trident Heart & Vascular, managing practice operations, credentialing, payer contracting, revenue cycle management, compliance, reimbursement strategies, and growth initiatives.
In March 2026, she launched OnTheBeatMD, a platform focused on healthcare education, advocacy, transparency, and patient awareness. She also hosts "On the Beat with Priya," a podcast that fosters open conversations among healthcare professionals and the public about medicine, prevention, healthcare policy, and future patient care.
Dr. Vejayan is preparing to publish her upcoming book, "Behind the White Coat: The Hidden Truth About Modern Medicine," which examines the realities of contemporary healthcare and promotes better understanding between healthcare providers, patients, and communities.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I credit my success to my family, my support system, and a husband who has always motivated me to reach my goals. No significant achievement is made alone, and I am lucky to be surrounded by people who believe in me, challenge me to grow, and support me through both my personal and professional demands.
As a wife, mother of four, healthcare leader, author, and podcast host, I recognize the importance of juggling multiple responsibilities. A solid home foundation has enabled me to explore opportunities in healthcare, advocacy, media, and education while staying true to the values that matter most.
I also believe that success isn't just about personal accomplishments but also about the people who support us and the impact we have on others. The encouragement from family, mentors, colleagues, and friends has greatly contributed to my journey, and I am sincerely thankful for their support.

The encouragement of family, mentors, colleagues, and friends has played a significant role in my journey, and I am deeply grateful for their support.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The most valuable career advice I received was from my husband early in our marriage: "Build your life, not just your resume." Back then, I was focused on traditional success markers like titles, achievements, and how I thought my career should look. His advice reminded me that success isn’t solely about recognition, awards, or following a set path. Instead, it’s about engaging in meaningful work that reflects your values.
Medicine has always been my passion, but my path has changed in unexpected ways. While I no longer practice clinically, I’ve found purpose through healthcare operations, advocacy, education, podcasting, and writing. His words gave me permission to shift my focus from merely checking boxes to finding ways to contribute, grow, and make an impact.
I’ve learned that fulfillment comes from doing work you truly enjoy, regardless of public recognition. Success isn’t just about grades, titles, or honors. It’s about the life you create, the people you help, and the difference you make in the process.
At the time, I was focused on traditional measures of success: titles, accomplishments, and what my career was supposed to look like. His advice reminded me that success is not always defined by recognition, awards, or following a predetermined path. Instead, it is about pursuing work that is meaningful and aligned with your values.

While I no longer practice clinically, I have found purpose through healthcare operations, advocacy, education, podcasting, and writing. That advice gave me permission to focus less on checking boxes and more on finding ways to contribute, grow, and make an impact.
I have learned that fulfillment comes from doing work you genuinely love, whether or not it comes with public recognition. Success is not measured by grades, titles, or accolades alone. It is measured by the life you build, the people you help, and the difference you make along the way.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering healthcare is to stay open to possibilities and never let a single title, role, or career path define you.
One belief that has guided me throughout my journey is that knowledge is empowerment.. The more you learn, the more confidently you can advocate for yourself, your patients, your profession, and your future. Never stop learning, even when your path takes unexpected turns.
When I was younger, I believed success in medicine followed a specific roadmap. Over time, I learned that careers are rarely linear, and some of the most meaningful opportunities come from being willing to evolve, adapt, and embrace new challenges. Healthcare is constantly changing, and the women who thrive are often those who remain curious, resilient, and open to growth.
I also believe that resilience and grit are already present in many women who choose healthcare. The challenge is learning to apply those qualities when plans change or obstacles arise. Sometimes the path you imagined for yourself is not the one you ultimately take, and that is okay. Growth often happens outside our comfort zones.
Most importantly, do not spend your career trying to fit into a box. Build a life and career that reflect your values, your passions, and the impact you want to make. Continue learning, continue growing, and remember that knowledge is one of the most powerful tools you will ever have.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges in healthcare today is navigating an increasingly complex system while maintaining confidence in your abilities and purpose. For many professionals, particularly women, self-doubt can be a significant obstacle, often fueled by external expectations, comparisons, or others' opinions. Learning to trust your knowledge, experience, and judgment is an ongoing process that requires resilience and self-awareness.
From a healthcare perspective, another major challenge is that many of medicine's operational realities are not formally taught during training. Understanding reimbursement, practice operations, payer systems, healthcare policy, and the business side of medicine is often learned through experience, which can be overwhelming for new physicians and contribute to frustration and burnout. This knowledge gap is one reason I wrote my upcoming book, Behind the White Coat: The Hidden Truth About Modern Medicine.
At the same time, I see tremendous opportunity. More healthcare professionals are speaking openly about physician well-being, system challenges, and the need for meaningful reform. Digital platforms have also created unprecedented opportunities for education, advocacy, mentorship, and collaboration.
One of my core beliefs is that knowledge is empowerment. The more we understand about healthcare, leadership, and ourselves, the better equipped we are to create positive change. I am particularly encouraged by the growing presence of women in healthcare leadership and the increasing willingness of professionals to support, mentor, and learn from one another. Together, we have the opportunity to build a more informed, compassionate, and sustainable future for healthcare.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me are family, honesty, loyalty, and integrity.
As a wife, mother of four, healthcare leader, and advocate, I have learned that success means very little if it comes at the expense of the people who matter most. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that work will always be there, but the moments we miss with our children and loved ones cannot be replaced. Titles, accomplishments, and recognition may come and go, but the relationships we build and the memories we create with family endure.
I also place a high value on honesty and loyalty. Trust is the foundation of every meaningful relationship, whether in healthcare, business, friendships, or family life. I believe people deserve transparency, authenticity, and the confidence that my words and actions align.
Another value that has become increasingly important to me is knowing when to say no. Setting healthy boundaries helps us stay focused on our priorities, protect our time, and remain aligned with our purpose. It is not always easy, but it is often necessary for both personal fulfillment and professional growth.
Ultimately, I strive to live a life guided by service, integrity, and gratitude, never losing sight of what matters most: family, meaningful relationships, and making a positive impact on others.
