Her Story

About Priyanshi

I've been in consulting for almost 4 years now, and I'm currently a senior consultant at Deloitte Consulting, a position I've held for close to two and a half years. What inspired me to get into strategy consulting was how dynamic it is - you get to see a lot of industries and different types of work in a very short span of time. You get to choose what you want to do before you really make a decision about your career without having prior experience. In my field, I got to see marketing across all four industries - whether it was banks, TMT (technology and telecommunications), consumer, or pharma - before I came into what I really wanted to be. Plus, it gives you a lot of opportunities to work across clients, so you get to see a little bit of each client's atmosphere and culture. That was very exciting for me. My day-to-day varies depending on my project. Currently, I'm in an operate project, so I start my day at 9, follow up on meetings and emails, and connect with my team members who are spread across different regions - half of my team is in India, and some are in Mexico. I see where they've left off and where they are in their day, then I connect with my client for recurring and new meetings. After lunch, I focus on the real work - creating deliverables and outputs. Then I create handoffs for other teams, work on Deloitte-side initiatives like proposals or firm initiatives, and close in the evening.

Ten minutes with Priyanshi

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think just being very intentional with what you wanted to do next, and not being afraid to ask people for help - that has been quite helpful. My first manager used to say, always, don't be afraid to ask for help at Deloitte, because there will be somebody who can help you. I think that really carried me forward. Before that, in college, I always asked questions, and I was very intentional about, hey, this is what I want to do next - you did something similar, how did you do it? And I think that just really helped me push forward. It's been the collective guidance of a lot of people.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

It's not advice, really, it's just that some of my leaders at Deloitte have been really kind to me, and that just showed me that leadership is more about kindness than about anything else. You can teach the work to anybody, but if you're kind, people would want to go the extra step for you and want to do better work themselves and want to work with you. And I think just that treatment that I got inspired me to be kinder at work.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Consulting is a good field. For a female, it's long hours and it is demanding, but it is extremely rewarding as well. If you're able to perform, it's an extremely rewarding field - they come back and they compound the rewards, so that's good. Starting out with consulting is always a good thing, because you get to see a lot very fast. As a female, they help you build that confidence, communication, and executive presence early on, which I think goes a longer mile than we've known or attributed to. Building that network and building your support system early always helps. So, as a female in consulting, I would say find the people who are good and who support you, and then make sure that you keep that network alive - not in the traditional networking sense, but more like, keep them updated on what you're doing, keep them updated on where you want to go, and just be very vocal and let them help you.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I think kindness, for sure. It's from a book that I read some time back, Wonder. It said, be kinder than necessary - be more kinder than necessary - and I think that just resonated with me. Another thing is be authentic, because if you're not authentic, you'll just burn out very soon. So be who you are, own up to it, and find the people who resonate with you, and then it's just much more easy to go by life. Authenticity and kindness are very important to me.
