Her Story

About Purvi

My journey into the petrochemical industry began with a childhood fascination with chemistry. As I grew up, I became more exposed to the manufacturing industry and was captivated by how things are made. I attended seminars as a kid that sparked my interest, and I always wanted to be an engineer who works in a plant. This passion led me to pursue chemical engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After four and a half years working in plant operations, I decided I wanted to transition to the corporate and commercial side of the business, so I pursued my MBA at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Today, I work on the commercial side at Dow Chemical Company, managing major contracts with asset managers and overseeing operations for Dow's nine crackers. My role involves buying commodity materials from external fractionators and managing the month-to-month financial closing for the business. I work closely with plants and external suppliers on production levels, consumption rates, inventory management, and strategic decisions about whether to sell materials based on market conditions or store them for better future returns. What I really enjoy about working at this Fortune 500 company is the culture - it's so welcoming that within just a couple of months, you feel like people are super friendly, helpful, and supportive of each other.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I'm at the mid-level management level, and when you're trying to move up the ladder from mid-management, it's very, very tough because that triangle gets a little bit narrower and narrower. The best advice I've received is to be positive and always try to think about what impact you are making today and what impact you can make in the future. I'm pretty sure one day or the other day, it will lead you to where you want to be and what your desires are.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep working hard and do not give up. Whatever dreams you have, please keep working towards them, push yourself, and life will reward you.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Currently, the economic conditions are very, very tough all around the country, so it is a little bit hard to keep up with your responsibilities while you are trying to juggle to find the next opportunity. The geopolitical tensions that are going on are driving up oil prices, and we're seeing gas prices spike dramatically. In Texas, we're paying around $3.39 to $3.40 per gallon, but in places like California, it's around $6. It's crazy and insane, and the majority of people are struggling with the way these prices are hiking.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity. It's important in both work and personal life. Without integrity, there's really no basis to work with someone, and you've got to have it in your personal life too. Integrity encompasses honesty, trustworthiness, and ethics.
