Ten minutes with Rachel
01What do you attribute your success to?
My mother. She has always been the woman to do it all. She was manager of her department in banking and never missed a soccer game. She pushed me to follow my passions over money, to make sure I enjoy the work that I do. When I told her I was going to move across the country to follow a dream, she never hesitated in her support. On days I felt like it would take too much to achieve my goal, she gave me courage and confidence. She has been my role model and my biggest cheerleader in life and has shown me through example that I can achieve anything I put my mind to.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
You will never know everything, you have to be able to learn every day. Even when you are the "expert."
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. Look for examples of women who have done it and seek advice and mentorship. When we build each other up, we all succeed.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The challenge currently is the state of the industry. Many wineries and vineyard management companies are closing or selling. Promotions and raises are put on hold.
Another challenge for a mother in agriculture is finding childcare, when you start work at 6 or 7 am. Having a supportive partner is 100% necessary.
An opportunity is the large network of women in ag that come together to help each other with advice, equipment needs, and job openings. I rely on these women.
