Her Story

About Rachel

Rachel Coveney is a business development professional in the senior living industry based in Massachusetts. She currently serves as the Massachusetts Director of Business Development for Maplewood Senior Living, a role she began three weeks prior to the call. Her journey in the field began just over two and a half years ago after spending more than 20 years as a stay-at-home mom. She started in recreation at a senior living community, advanced to move-in coordinator, and now focuses on creating relationships with referral sources, supporting sales teams, and organizing continuing education programs. She attributes her quick progression to her past experiences in entrepreneurship and the support of those around her. Rachel holds a Master's in Graphic Design from Boston University following an undergraduate degree from a small college in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. She received an Ambassadors of Excellence Award from a previous employer for her support of the company and its people.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Rachel

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the people that surround me, especially my husband's support, and the work ethic modeled by my great-grandparents who built their own business. Their examples contribute to my work ethic and drive to forge forward.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't underestimate your past experiences. It's okay to ask questions and walk into a room and not be the person that knows everything. Nobody knows everything. Everyone needs to listen and ask questions to learn.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Pick something that you like doing. There are so many different jobs in senior living - if you like being creative, work in recreation; if you like marketing, be a director of branding; if you like sales, be a sales director. You'll learn all the different types of jobs within and there are lots of opportunity for growth.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is the overwhelmingness families see when trying to make this change for a family member. Making sure families feel supported and know the services each community has, ensuring the smoothest transition possible.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

To always be kind and honest, and when you say you're going to do something, follow through. I also value the thoughtfulness of bringing people together and noticing the small details that make someone feel appreciated.
